Northwest Mesaba RJ-85 Enroute To DTW From AVQ

Just noticed an ex-Mesaba RJ-85 flying enroute from AVQ (Marana, Arizona) to DTW. I found it using the AirNav Live Flight Tracker and it can be found on flightaware as http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N505XJ I wonder if its coming out of storage... any ideas?

Doubtful it was flying out of AVQ. Most likely MZJ where there are a few RJ-85's.

The last XJ Avro flight was ROC-DTW on Dec. 1, 2006. Almost a year ago to date.

You may be right about this. It could have started out of MZJ but actually picked up an IFR flight plan from TUS approach control who could have entered AVQ instead. Either way, an RJ85 on the move to Europe (for CityJet/Air France?)...

There were 12 avros that remained in the desert after all the 23 for CityJet were acquired. I've heard that at least some of them are going to South Africa. I am under the impression that all the a/c bound for CityJet are in Europe already. Kinda ironic this a/c will be making an appearance once again in DTW. A little nostalgia.

Possible. Right now, the last city on its "list" is Keflavik, so if it's not stopping there, it could pretty much be heading anywhere in Europe...or, for that measure, Africa. Anyone heard of any orders lately?

I wonder if the RJ-85 could've had more success if it were a twin engine jet instead of a quad.

If I remember correctly, their operating costs were one of the top reasons that NW retired them from the fleet, but they seemed to have a great following in terms of comfort.

Which engines would've made good choices for this bird? Would it have made any difference on it's economics?

I believe that lack of a suitable powerplant was one reason for making it a quad.

Some are going to go to BA at LCY to help with longer flights to BCN and MAD.

Some more will probably end up here in EXT too, we have had 4 or 5 coming through here for maintainance for WX/AF.

Who in South Africa would be getting these? I've wanted to fly on one for years ... but haven't had the opportunity to (yet). I know Air Botswana flies the BAe-146 -- is it getting more?
