AtlasJet A\C With 59 Pax Missing - Central Turkey

Just heard on Sky News as going to bed, that they were getting news in from the Reuters news agency that a Turkish aircraft over central Turkey has gone missing with 59 people onboard (including 7 crew).

The aircraft is an AtlasJet aircraft and is missing from Radar and failed to arrive at the city of Isparta.

I don't know much about AtlasJet, but they are a relatively new Turkish airline of about two years and fly a new fleet of 15 aircraft including A319, A320, CRJ-900 and 757-200.

Reuters reports the airline is private airline company AtlasJetair. Plane was due to land as Isparta. Dissapeared from radar before it was due to land. 49 passengers and seven crew.

That doesn't sound good at all, the aircraft has been missing for four hours, a diversion is hopeful but not very likely. I hope and pray everyone is OK.

PPRUNE report suggests this is an MD83, leased from "World Focus" Airlines. Atlas currently operates three such aircraft, TC-AKL,M and N.

Aircraft has, unfortunately, crashed.

Reuters is reporting that according to Turkish TV, wreckage of the plane has been found.

unfortunately, it has crashed, departed at 00.50 in IST and was due to land at 02.00.

Actually Atlasjets own fleet is pretty young, and some are fabric-new (319/CRJ).
They are a reliable and and a decent Airline.

Their Problem is, they leased out their own fleet. Lots of A320/321 are long-term leased to Saudia.

As they are not an operator of MD83 or A310, these are leased on ACMI basis.
They can only be blamed not to chose a reliable lessor

Just heard about the crash in the news.

They say it is a MD-83 and they have just found the wreckage of the plane.

This is really sad.

My thoughts belongs to all who suffer in this crash.

Wreckage has been found, and as said earlier appears to be an MD-83!! Still seems to pretty breaking news!

My thoughts and prayers go to the victims and their family members..
Worldfocus , the lessor of the aircraft, has a lot of bad history in terms of shady mx practices. I am utterly mad to SHGM (Turkish CAA) to keep this airline operating for last 2-3 years. We don't know the reason for the crash, but this airline should have shut down long long time ago.

TC-AKM is the reg, the one that went through hijacking is TC-AKN.

RIP all on board, and condolences to the families.

BBC reports that "luggage and debris [are] strewn across a large area". Wouldn't this normally point to an in-flight breakup? With the recent political situation in Turkey - in particular the (possible?) military incursion in the Kurdish portion of northern Iraq - let's just hope that the reason for the crash was not the worst possible.

A sad moment for Turkish aviation-my thoughts are with the families of all victims of this accident.
But let's not jump to hasty conclusions as to the quality of Atlasjet.
To me the airline looks well managed and determined to build a modern and consistent fleet.

Speculation about terrorism is the last thing that is needed in the tense situation in Turkey right now. Hopefully, the information dissemination channels will do the responsible thing and not incite people... let the investigators do their job(s). Incitement can only lead to more lives lost and that the last thing ANYONE wants. For now, lets judge humanity favourably and assume it was an horrific accident from as of yet unknown causes. Although I doubt they read this forum, I pray the Turkish media do the same.

Wow, this is very tragic. You are right, the photo in the Yahoo article also does not look like a breakup (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071130/ap_on_re_mi_ea/turkey_plane). Is the transcript publicly available somewhere?

the news in turkish will release a limited version of the atc chatter, i cant post anything here, but so far as far as the controllers go nothing was wrong with the a/c reported...

and remember, they were 18 km from touchdown, metar and tafs only cover upo from 5-8 miles here....so we dont know if there was radiation fog or patches of fog where they were, it was night time...0145 local..perfect for the former mentioned weather...

News reports suggests that the plane disappeared from radar while descending. Any thoughts on what might have happened? Seems that they did not declare any form off emergency.

I read that the Weather was inclement before landing, I hate to speculate but I think this could have played a part, anyone clue on what aircraft type it is along with registration?

According to airline and government officials, the weather conditions were good at the time. No technical problems were reported either. Apparently, the plane was already given clearance to land shortly before the crash.

From the transcript, it sounds like they have reached the VOR over LTFC (Isparta), and started their final descent.
The last communication with the tower, the pilot says :" We are in-bound?".

Really weird. No problems reported. Very clear night. It sounds like CFIT.
What a difference EGPWS makes as opposed to GPWS.

i just viewed the approach charts, the weather and the 3D map...it looks like a likely cause could be a higher than normal outbound to inbound turn causing an overshoot at 12 miles, which puts you right where the crash site is Sad

it's just speculation but it all fits the info i have

The airplane's main fuselage is pretty much in one piece except the nose and the tail.. The pilots were doing a VOR approach. I am not sure why this approach is a problem with pilots.. I am sure some people will come up with 'We want ILS' kind of crap but the $1,000,000 question is 'why they went below?'.
Was the EGPWS working on the airplane? Was it MEL'ed ? Was it working and crew brushed it off?

And lastly , i am kind of skeptical that there is no sign of fire in the wreckage..
