Old PHX Tower Dismantled

Fri Nov 30, 2007 4:58 am

I got a tip from a friend a couple of days ago that they would be removing the cab from the old control tower at PHX. Got on top of the T3 garage to watch it today. It was quite a small event, but interesting nonetheless. Here are a few photos of how it went down:

My question is, does anyone know how they plan to deal with the remaining structure?

I know they've had the entire area around the base cordened off with construction signs and what not, though traffic hasn't seemed to be a problem. My guess is they will dismantle it section by section and use that same crane to lower it down until it's small enough to knock over...

I'll keep an eye on it when I head to work everyday.
Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

Awww dangit. I was hoping they'd turn it into an observation deck or something. O well.

I actually toured the old tower two years ago. It was pretty interesting to stand in there and watch the new tower being built, that's when I realized how tall the new tower really is.

Does any one know if they are going to take the whole structure down. I will try to get some pictures of it today but its raining so we will see.

For those keeping score at home, KGEU tower will be the new home for the old KPHX cab.

The remaining structure is scheduled for destruction as well. I'm not sure how though.

Sweet, my (former) home base for flying!

That would be quite a sight. Sad to see it go, but man...that would be really sweet.

I drove by the site on my way to drop bags off at UA and saw that all that was left of the cab was twisted metal. Tis a shame to see the tower go

I agree with Fly2HMO an observation deck would be nice
