Interflug IL-62 Lands On A Field

Am 23. Oktober 1989 landete Kallbach einen Langstreckenjet vom Typ IL-62 (Kennung DDR-SEG) auf einem nur 900 m langen Stoppelfeld in Stölln. Das Flugzeug war ein Geschenk an die Stadt, in der Lilienthal bei seinen Flugversuchen abstürzte. Die Landung wurde sorgfältig geplant und das Flugzeug dafür entsprechend präpariert. Eine regulär betriebene IL-62 benötigt für eine übliche Landung im Linienverkehr mit Passagieren und Gepäck eine Piste von circa 2500 m Länge.

The plane was a present to the city of Stölln, where Otto Lilienthal crashed during his flying-trials.

Very funny. At first I thought it was a model plane

I think the 20 people killed and their relatives (not to mention those injured) found it significantly less funny.

I thought it was a model plane as well. Incredible it didn't break up...

The video displayed is not one of that accident. Nobody died on the video, the plane was empty and being ferried to that field, and supposed to land in the grass.

The accident occured during take off, in the video the plane is landing.

That's not the same event.... the crash and the field landing are 2 different things.

Thanks for the links Tom. I would say that it is more impressive than funny.
Pity my German is not good enough to understand fully the explanations of the pilot.
It was obviously quite a moment for them (including the wifes).

Hi!

This video is absolutely fantastic and these pilots are amazing indeed!!! I think that small decrease of the field played a part on the final landing, but the way the pilots put the tail down ( was it to increase the resistance and also to slow down the airplane ) is incredible!!! What a spectacular event...I can understand those ladies quite nervous and hugging in the end!!!

Does someone know where that museum is? I'd like to visit it. Are there some more aircrafts?
I wonder how an Airbus or a Boeing could survive that kind of landing?

It's in a small town in north-eastern Germany. Actually, I think the IL-62 is the whole "museum"...

On 23 October 1989, the Ilyushin Il-62 "DDR-SEG" of the East German airline Interflug was intentionally landed on the 900m short grass airfield of Stöln/Rhinow in a risky and dusty maneuver [2] The jet is used to commemorate the site of the fatal crash of Otto Lilienthal (1848 -1896) at the Gollenberg hill. Nick-named "Lady Agnes" after Lilienthal's wife, it is now used as a museum and for weddings.

But 737s can land on (and take off from) grass-covered levees (dykes) as this TACA 737-300 did near MSY in 1988 after both engines flamed out in heavy rain/hail and couldn't be restarted:

Good you found this video, Tommy! I remember have seen that one back in 1989 on the Dutch TV news and was astonished about that landing on the grass.

Altough there was an option on the 737-200 for an "unprepared airfield" or "gravel/dirt kit".

There was a report on the Captain who did this landing on some german TV who btw. was one of the youngest pilots in DDR history. He ended his career at Germania Express.
His name is Dieter Kallbach.

There was a Boeing video out some years ago that showed a 737-200 doing a landing and takeoff from a grass field. I think there was also a 727 one...
