Midwest Winter Weather Waiver, Rebook on nwa.com

Updated November 30, 2007 - 2:00 p.m. CST

Due to snow and winter weather expected in the upper Midwest U.S. on Saturday, December 1, Northwest Airlines has issued a weather waiver to assist passengers traveling in the area.

Passengers with confirmed tickets for travel December 1 or 2, 2007 to, from or through Michigan, Minnesota or Wisconsin may:

Reschedule travel to begin November 30 through December 4, 2007 in the same cabin of service as originally scheduled, without penalty or administrative change fees, subject to availability.

Reschedule travel to begin December 5 or 6, 2007 in the same class of service as originally scheduled, without penalty or administrative change fees, subject to availability.

Reschedule travel to begin December 7 through December 16, 2007 without penalty, advance purchase or administrative change fees, subject to availability.

Self-service rebooking is available. E-Ticket customers are encouraged to reschedule their trip under these waiver guidelines using nwa.com's Manage My Reservations

For assistance with changes outside the guidelines noted above, please contact Northwest Reservations at 1-800-225-2525.

All passengers should check flight and gate status prior to leaving for the airport.

Followed by spring thunderstorms...then summer thunderstorms...then autumn thunderstorms...

While I am grateful that airlines are being pro-active in the re-booking process and allowing travellers to make changes to their itineraries, I hope that more planning and forethought is going into airlines' strategies in dealing with issues. No airport is immune, and the number one reason for delays is weather.

Are most airlines making these kinds of adjustments ahead of time nowadays?

i can't speak for other airlines, since i fly mostly NW and YX, but it appears NW is trying to. of course we won't know if it is just talk or really action until all the weather hits and messes up everyone's lives. I would like to believe that this is the start of something worthwhile for the customer.

Uhhh why isn't Iowa included in this? We will be worse off than Minnesota with much more Ice predicted here.

Meanwhile, out here in the West... major delays into and out RNO due to weather in LAS, PHX, and LAX... I think there was a ground stop at LAS earlier.

I work for B6 and I am very worried, simply b/c of what will surely be an all day ATC delay

The forecast is for mostly rain, switching from early AM snow showers...

ATC programs....check
Flight cancelation...check
Another February/March Disaster....doubtful

Out here at ACV and points north, we are due for heavy winds and lots of rain. Here on the Humboldt Coast, they are calling for sustained winds at 30 to 40mph with gusts up around 50 to 60 mph. Higher rates in the hills above town. Looks like we may get 2 to 4 inches of rain. It will be fun flying into ACV the next few days. Not so much down at SFO but it should interesting enough to cause delays. Looks like the midwest and east coast are getting some interesting weather this weekend as well. Hang in there folks!!

LAS, PHX, and SAN have been and out of groundstops and GDPs all afternoon and evening...

For real fun tomorrow, watch MCI turn into Ice Station Zebra, according to the TAFs, anyway...

I was thinking the same thing too, Ice storm warnings and winter storm warnings abound around here, and Iowa is one of NW's stronger service markets. UA has already cancelled some flights in and out of CID today.

It's possible that MKE will stay open during the whole weather event if the forecasters are right. The closer you are to Lake Michigan the less likely you are going to see freezing rain. MKE is not far from the lake. All this media hype gets old especially when these storms don't produce as forecasted. Is it me or did they do better winter storm forecasts in the 70s?

Amen to that, I am so sick of them saying "We have been telling you this has been coming for 5 days" or "We are in a winter weather alert!" touting all their forecasting models and machinery. lol.

I hope is blows over and is not as bad as they say

Are you worried about the delays in general, or how B6 will respond? If it is the latter, I wouldn't worry to much, a lot has changed.

Looks like DSM is closed...any info?
http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pb...e?AID=/20071201/NEWS/71201007/1001

Due to DISABLED AIRCRAFT, the Des Moines International Airport (DSM) was closed as of Dec 01 at 08:15 AM CST. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is Dec 01 at 02:30 PM CST.

And ORD is already on GDP avg. 1 hr 16 minute delays...

That was yesterday, and routinely done as a "best winds" route given yesterday's jetstream orientation.

Today, she's 7:06 enroute, on pretty much a straight-shot route to avoid today's jetstream winds.. (190 knots on the first jetstream, and 150 knots on the one to the south of the first one)

United Flight Slid off Runway. I like how not 1 but 2 planes slid off the runway before they close the airport. It is raining/ ice pellets fairly hard here in des moines right now, streets are very icy with around 1.4 inch of ice on trees and 1"-2" of ice pellets(not sleet) on the ground and still coming down. 25 degrees right now and very windy too.

Wow that B6 flight is amazing 7 hours in the air? My dad is the operations manager here at BOS and they are already predicting a heavy snowfall Sunday night into Monday so after this storm leaves the midwest its still not over...

I believe everyone is overlooking this situation and bragging about how they are/have the worst weather. The original post was about NW and not B6. It also only pertains to MN, WI, and MI because these areas (I live in MI) are supposed to be hit pretty bad with three different types of storms in the next 24 hours (snow, then ice, then rain). Also, NW has their two most important hubs in this area (MSP and DTW), and MKE still sees considerably NW traffic (despite the downsizing of the focus city) and also most NW traffic will pass through these areas. So, IA folks complaining that the waiver doesn't include them need to realize that most NW flights they take are going to have to pass through MSP or DTW anyways (so then it does include them) and the only exceptions are the DSM-MEM, DSM-LGA,DSM-DCA,and MCW-FOD. So not that many flights are affected. I think it is great that NW is trying and there is no penalty for you to change the flight. Also, they have just redone the booking section of their website (once you have searched for flights, the flight listings are now easier to read and easier to navigate and more organized)

Right now DSM is closed do to a Diabled aircraft. What ever that means???? But, here in SE Michigan, they are saying we could start to see snow by 600PM tonight with up to 8 inches and then about .10 of an inch or little more of Ice. Then all changing over to all rain by 10:00am Sunday morning. Then back to snow by sunday night.

So can anyone tell me what is going on in DSM right now????

We'll see how this one pans out, but it looks like it's going to be one heck of a trip! Does the A320 have the legs to do this kind of trip for the given wind conditions? I'll keep an eye on it, but I feel sorry for these people! I also just realized that that's about how long it took me to go from ATL to ZRH!  Wow!

It does have the legs, if they limit the payload to few and no one.

Not that far north but they did fly to a part of Ontario that is inaccessible by road. Churchill, Manitoba is on the western shore of Hudson Bay and the closest major city is Winnipeg which is 624 miles to the south. Yellowknife is in the Northwest Territories and located 634 miles north of Edmonton. I tried to find Canadian towns near to where they flew over but there was nothing on the atlas I have. So basically they flew over the middle of nowhere, Canada. But they did make it as far north as halfway between Thunder Bay, Ontario and Fort Albany, ON which is located along the southern shores of James Bay. James Bay is located along the southern end of Hudson Bay. That is the farthest north I have seen a US carrier fly a domestic segment in order to avoid the weather. Good eye for catching that unique flight route!!

Very nice illustration of optimal flight routing. A 190 kt jetstream will make things interesting  Smile

Yes currently there is a CRJ-200 just off the side of the runway with the Right Main Gear sunk 7/8ths of the way up the tire with the wing resting on the ground.

Also in MSN there is a YV CRJ-700 that overran the end of the runway due to the weather also.
