IB: Wierd Air Fares!

Fri Dec 07, 2007 2:47 am

Hi everyone,
I'll be flying EZE-MAD on Feb 9th returning on Feb 22nd on IB. I booked my ticket a couple of months ago and paid €920.
So out of curiosity I checked today on IB's webpage what the fares were for the same dates and flights and what I found was the following:
Economy - € 3,306 (!)
... and here comes the funny part ...
Business - € 2,904 !!!

Question: how can it be € 400 more expensive on economy???
The flights are exactly the same
EZE-MAD Feb09 IB6842 leaving at 14.20
MAD-EZE Feb22 IB6845 leaving at 12.35

I don't think I'll ever understand how air fares work, but this was a surprise.

I'll appreciate any information on this cause I'm completely lost  Smile

regards

I looked these up, and coach is sold out on the outbound, with the fares defaulting to a higher fare bucket for Business (JR-class) outbound, with Y1 class (a very expensive coach fare bucket) on the return.

If you buy Business both ways, however, it prices to a discounted Business fare, DRT8.

Ok, that should explain it, thanks!
What was wierd was that it always shpwed "turista" (economy), outbound too. So from what you found out if I would ppurchase that ticket once I get to the check in I would be given a Business seat?

Outbound is pricing as J-class, which is Business. You'd get a Business class seat. You can sign on as a Guest here and check the details yourself:

(Change the sales city to something like CDG to have it price in Euros, to match your example.)

Similar happened to me yesterday booking a train ticket; London to Birmingham on Virgin, almost full on my day of travel in 2nd class, 1st Class worked out 20% less expensive.

Yep, just booked a ticket on LX, and business was cheaper than economy! So, a good opportunity to sample their J product  thumbsup

Hi Ezeiza,

the Business Class fare you found on IB website is a Business class with many restrictions (changes and refunds penalised) and the tourist class you found is an economy full fare with no restrictions.

Gerard

He he .... yes these funny things can happen... It should appear simple to solve the problem, but technically it's often not that simple.. I work in revenue management at a passenger ship operator, and occasionally we also miss these things, and you can get a luxury cabin for less than a standard one... what we usually do when these things happen is then upgrading some of the highest-paying pax in standard cabins, freeing up "Y" capacity..

Hi Gerard, thanx  Smile

I was also wondering though, that when something like this happens, won't you feel cheated by the prices offered? Meaning that if I would have to fly on those dates for whatever reason, I end up paying the full economy fare because I assumed, using logic, that the Business fare would be higher, and then found out the prices that were actually offered, would there be anything I can do about it or would I just be laughed at by anyone who found out?  Wink

Not really the thing is do you know what your buying? (I don't mean this personally) Some customers know the difference and others don't. It's not unusual for a Promo fare or even a discounted Business to be lower that a full Economy. As I said you should know what you want and what its worth.
These are my principles but if you don't like them I have others
