LH Summer 08 Longhaul?

Mon Dec 10, 2007 4:27 pm

Can anyone post a run down of LH's summer 2008 longhaul plans?

I am looking in particular at the Middle Eastern network. Dammam seems to be non-stop, but where does the flight continue on to?

Kind Regards

Mike

So far, LH has mostly announced additions to its North American network for 2008. LH will start FRA-SEA flights, and resume flights between YYC and FRA. Also, LH plans to start flights from DUS to JFK, ORD, and YYZ. Elsewhere, LH announced that it will resume MUC-SIN flights.

The online timetable on Lufthansa's website indicates that flight 628 to Dammam continues on to Abu Dhabi. Elsewhere in the Middle East, LH has formally applied to resume flights between MUC and TLV in the summer of 2008. However, LH is awaiting governmental approval, so no announcement has yet been made.

Also, LH plans to start flights from DUS to JFK, ORD, and YYZ.

I think you mean DUS to EWR, not JFK. The DUS-EWR and DUS-ORD routes aren't technically new LH routes. They're replacing the all-business class flights currently operated for LH by PrivatAir A319LRs with their own A340-300s.

The news report that I read did not indicate what type of equipment LH planned to deploy on this route. However, the report stated that LH wants to offer daily flights on this route. In the past, LH flew MUC-TLV only 3 times a week.

I don't think they will go down to only 2 Privatair aircraft. I believe that LH is still researching where they will send the 3rd aircraft.

Hi Stylo, Great list you put together!
Thanks for that. It's a nice starting point for the discussion.

This is the new airport in Tehran, Iran. Old THR airport is now only used for domestic flights.
IKA stands for Imam Khomeini Airport.

Indeed suprisingly, but when you take the DUS-EWR flight in account aswell. The amount of flights ex Germany to NYC area are about the same.

The list still misses :

FRA-YYC ( xx weekly ) 333?
FRA-NKG ( 5x weekly ) 343?
MUC-SHE ( 3x weekly ) 343?

I noticed today that the 2 new chinese destinations were not yet loaded in the system.

- YYZ downgrade to 343 from 346

Perhpas this is as a result of new daily DUS YYZ service on LH, thus presumably easing the loads on FRA somewhat. As well LH codeshares on AC, which I believe will add an additional YYZ FRA frequency (2x daily) one of which will be upguaged to a 77W, and AC will also maintain daily YYZ MUC on 763. Thus LH should have, in effect, 3x daily YYZ FRA, 1x daily YYZ DUS and 1x daily YYZ MUC, though not all on its own metal to be sure.

Interesting to see that YUL FRA gets the 346 another nice addition to YUL anyway.

So the "LH cutting of the MNL tag-on from CAN"- rumour isn't true then? Cuz that would be sush a shame, especially as LH has the most extent presence in Souteast Asia with six destinations.

Also, it's really exciting to follow the growth of LH in China and India. Their number of destinations and flights over there is simply amazing!  Smile

Starting summer 2008 LH will be cutting MNL tag-on from CAN flights. This is needed in order to increase aircraft utilisation and be able to cope with logrange expansion.

LAD is confirmed as well. Will operate once a week on day 2 as LH 560/561. Aircraft will stay 15 hours on the ground so only one crew will be necessary to operate this rotation. Dep FRA 2030. Dep LAD 2000.

It is true, actually: LH seems to be axing MNL from its longhaul network. MNL availability has been zeroed out for the entire summer, and I would assume that FRA CAN flights will be retimed to allow for an immediate turn around, ultimately increasing the aircraft utilization on that route. I guess that MNL has been too low yielding for LH, especially with the ever increasing presence of the Middle Eastern carriers there. Also, LH could likely not compete with KLM's daily nonstop flight on the route. Not so long ago, LH used to operate nonstop flights of its own between FRA and MNL.

This is indeed sad, since LH was besides KL the only carrier from Europe to MNL. How often and on which routing does KL fly MNL???

I am certainly not a scheduling expert but using some assumptions I came up with the following:

My assumptions:
The Private Air Flights are not included, but as of today 1 is still available (1 for MUC-DXB and 1 for FRA-EWR are already scheduled)

I compared summer 07 vs. summer 08 (at least what we know as of today)

LH will use at least 9 additional mediumhaul/longhaul aircraft:
5 333s
3 346s
1 A300 (during summer 07 they used them on CAI 2xdaily, and ALA/TSE 1xdaily, now also on KHT/ADD & KHI/LHE)

1 aircraft can make one daily flight e.g. FRA-SEA & SEA-FRA, not always 100% true e.g. EZE, LAD but on the other side YYC is a little bit less.

LH will have the following additional flights:
FRA-EZE 5xweekly
FRA-KHI-LHE 3xweekly
FRA-KWI 3xweekly (used to be 4weekly non-stop and 3 weekly combined with DMM, now 7 weekly non-stop)
FRA-LAD 1xweekly
FRA-MCO 6xweekly
FRA-NKG 5xweekly
FRA-SEA 7xweekly
FRA-YYC 7xweekly
MUC-ICN-SHE 3xweekly
MUC-SIN 6xweekly
DUS-EWR 7xweekly
DUS-ORD 6xweekly
DUS-YYZ 6xweekly

So 65 additional flights = 9,3 aircraft

On the other hand we will see the following reductions:

FRA-DTW -2xweekly
FRA-IAD -1xweekly
FRA-PVG -4xweekly
MUC-DEN -1xweekly

So 8 flights = 1,1 aircraft

So, if at all, there is 1 a/c still available.
Maybe still an option for MUC-BOM if the bilateral is revised.
I guess MUC-TLV if it comes would be on an additionally converted A300 or even 320.
But also shows no more room in 2008 for PHX, BOG, LIM, GIG (if not as a tag on on GRU), DKR and what else was rumoured in the past. So let the speculation for the 4 346s and the 380s which will arrive in 2009 begin...

I wonder if they will add more routes come winter other than just MIA-DUS.

TLV: 744 + 343 ==> 2x 346

No first class offered on any of the TLV flights anymore I gues as all A346 with 4 Class are based in TLV. I would assume there was never proper demand for F on TLV flights as flight times are relatively short 3:30 in air, outbound and inbound max 4h.

CAN will be reduced to 5/7. All new schedules show much efficient aircraft rotations. Through this new scheduling can LH achieve about 30 minutes per day per aircraft better utilisation. This means for the A340/A330 fleet about 2 extra aircraft.
Have a look at the NKG and SHE schedules.

Also, LH could likely not compete with KLM's daily nonstop flight on the route. Not so long ago, LH used to operate nonstop flights of its own between FRA and MNL.

Interesting because what European airlines serve MNL apart from KLM nonstop? I would wonder competition in MNL is not intense, especially if one considers other Asian markets. What's the explanation for MNL's poor performance in attracting flights?

Interesting because there is seldom competition in MNL - the country does not have a solid flag carrier neither airline compete for the MNL market. But tks for the information. And I also wonder why AF left for KLM the flights to MNL...

Yes, little competition but that's because airlines just find it difficult to make money on the VFR travel. The higher-yielding Filipino traffic is going to the U.S. in Canada.

AF left for KLM probably because, if I am not mistaken, Amsterdam has one of the world's largest Filipino communities.

How often and on which routing does KL fly MNL???

Daily nonstop AMS-MNL on the 772.

Now that KL is the only European carrier left in MNL, I hope fares won't rise. Though I think we can be pretty calm, since there's still the competition from the MIddle Eastern carriers. I guess those are partially the reason to why the yields didn't go up for LH.

You are correct. The Filipino community in the Netherlands in general is very large, but I doubt larger than the community in Paris or France. Thanks for all the info regarding MNL; at least KLM is managing to keep good results in its operations there and with LH out of the picture the future looks even brighter for KLM in MNL.

Like I said, I'm not sure, but I vaguely remember that the Filipino community in Amsterdam is the largest in all of Europe. And I believe that Amsterdam was the last European city that PAL flew to until they ended European operations.

Just for the record, Italy has the largest Filipino community in Europe. The Netherlands has the biggest Indonesian community. Maybe you confused? Although I can confirm that the Filipino community in Amsterdam is indeed substantive, although official numbers show that France's Filipino community is bigger than the Netherlands.
