Iberia To YYC

Just found this story on the Calgary Sun this morning, this is great news especially after getting the official nod for LH to start up to FRA in April of '08.

Can anyone in the know confirm this? Would the flight most likely be to MAD? What kind of equipment could we expect on the route?

I'd be absolutely shocked if this comes true, it doesn't make any sense for IB to serve YYC before YUL or YYZ and several other cities in the US (LAX, DFW, etc)

Well we did shock a lot of people when some of us on here said LH was coming to YYC, lot of naysayers with all of our supposed rumours and scuttlebutt, then look what happened! Booya baby!

Next up(bilaterals and all the crap notwithstanding) Emirates Big grin

LH serving YYC was a logical addition, just as the return of KLM would be. But IB???
If IB can't make YYZ, YUL, LAX financially viable, how are they going to make YYC work?

Rather than join the list of nay-sayers, will wait and see if there is indeed a press release. If IB is indeed YYC-bound, I would suspect that it is a route being subsidized by the City of YYC or the airport authority.

so tell me how Iberia is goign to make Calgary work, with no connections to the oil patch? Do you even know the traffic mix out of Calgary? Remember that its currently past the workday in Spain, and yet there is no corporate announcement on the Iberia website.

It could very well be that these may just be charter flights just like those from Korea, Japan etc. We'll have to wait and see till later today.

Okay, so when I pulled up the original bilateral agreement from 1988, it seems that YUL was the sole destination that Spanish airlines could operate (with beyond rights to MEX). I imagine this has been modified since, but in the absence of a liberalized air service agreement, traffic rights for Spain-YYC seem really surprising. The CTA doesn't specify what route authority exists, so the only document I could access that specified the routes was the original from the UN. Does anyone know what the bilateral says? I wonder if the Sun just got this mixed up and IB will simply be introducing a codeshare with BA. Otherwise, kudos to YYC.

See I don't get bogged down in the "details" when I hear stuff like this. I like planes, and aviation in general. If they think they can make it work than they announce the route. After that I just look forward to seeing them come into YYC.

Call it ignorance, I call it letting an airline run itself and not get caught up in internet quarterbacking.

I just love how quickly the YYC hate can come out of the woodwork with even the potential for something like this. Like I said no surprise. Perhaps Encana is subsidizing the route so their employees can go to Spain and its beaches for holidays? Wink

Any scheduled flight of Iberia from MAD to YYC for the next year.

Is the same as I put a new topic like: IB DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM BJZ TO HKG. Big grin

If I don't remember bad, Air Comet has flown from MAD to YMQ this summer with 310 equipment (not Trudeau. Was an airport at one hour driving from downtown but I don't remember exactly which airport was).

Any chance to see this airline flying to YYC?

Here I'll cool some of you guys down some, perhaps the Sun got a particularly dumb reporter with regards to aviation(aren't they all?) and the announcement is simply a codeshare on the BA route to LHR? Would that meet with everyone's approval? Big grin

If it is a codeshare service why all the fuss? Why would the Mayor and such attend a press conference just to announce a codeshare. Doesn't make sense. It will be interesting to see what comes of this today.

Ok I just checked newswire and CCN Matthews, and there is no indicated on any impending press conference.

Still no schedule on Iberia.com or amadeus.net, and still nothing on the Iberia website (keep in mind that it is now after 6pm in MAD).

Oh please get over yourself. Where is the YYC hate? People are saying that IBERIA can't make bigger markets work and you expect them to make a smaller market like YYC work. It wouldn't matter if it was YYC, YEG, YHZ, SCL, STL, or whatever.

Having read this thread from a completely neutral perspective (i.e. I have little vested interest in either YYC, MAD or Iberia) me thinks you're a little paranoid. I see no YYC hate... just honest probing questions regarding the article.

I don't know why it's so far-fetched that a carrier like IB would undertake a less than daily seasonal service? It would surprise me if it was more than that, but politicians call news conferences all the time to make announcements about marginal services if it makes them look busy.

Besides all the craziness about the economic viability of the route, I think this is a clear sign of LH not being after IB as it would make no sense to have two flights to Europe from YYC (one to FRA and one to MAD), wouldn't it? Or are they expecting some kind of economic boom in Calgary?

I would be equally as perplexed if Miat Mongolian Airlines was planning service betwwen Ulbantaar and Toronto.

Getting back to the topic. It's entirely conceivable that they may be planning a weekly summer charter between MAD & YYC (a la Korean Air), but beyond that, scheduled A340 service?? I don't think so.

Not at all. Tell me are you a psychiatrist? But it is a common theme that a lot of us from Alberta tend to see lately in light of our economic success. Of course I know there are tons of people here and anywhere else on the internet that would love to argue for days on end about how we are "lucky" that the oil just happens to be where it is. So change my quote from "YYC hate" to "Alberta hate", it's all one in the same. I'm not even one to get into these petty regional debates either mind you. I didn't announce that all the major banks were packing up from Toronto and moving to Calgary, I simply reported something that was pointed out to me in one of our fishwraps.

Edit: For the record I have absolutely nothing to do with any oil & gas company, and have seen none of the so called "Alberta Advantage" during this latest boom. Unless you count having a mortgage that can sink a ship an advantage!

Still even with the hope it was going to be another big euro airline in YYC this announcement is nice. MEX was a bit of a hole in the Calgary network so it is good to see a non-stop flight from one of the Mexican airlines. All we have had is the charters to the resort destinations. Now what we need is an big Asian announcement!

Hope they do well with it.

Sorry dude, YMQ is like saying LON for London England. It's the general code for the Montreal Metropolitan area. Everything would still have gone to Trudeau because Mirabel has been closed to passenger operations and St. Hubert isn't used (afaik) for scheduled passenger service.

What I do not get about IB is that they hardly have any service to the US and Canada and nothing in Asia and yet Calgary is coming to fruition? Calgary is an up and coming city but for one speaking of O & D, it is not a major business city and there are only a million residents in the area. There is little money coming from tourists because almost no one visits Calgary however, there is a large number of Europeans who do visit the Banff ski areas. I know when I was in Banff, many people were German and British but I saw no Spanish people. When I was talking to some of the people about coming to Banff, they all said they come because there are direct flights to London and Frankfurt, which reflects the people who are there, but the amount of Spanish tourists this route will draw will be very little. I really like IB as an airline, but this decision seems very out of the blue.

And breathing room is what you will get. It's a very welcome situation for many residents. I know intimately what the economy of Calgary revolves around, and I'm happy you are in a position to survive a major downturn. Unfortunately, many thousands in Calgary are not.

The Columbia, Kootenays and especially Okanagan. Prosperous times for a select few, yes. Unsustainable changes and expenses for better than 2/3 of the residents too. Try spending time in the Columbia Valley my friend. Talk to the locals. Those are the ones who are there after Labour Day. Buy them a coffee and prepare to have a few of your assumptions altered. Nobody resents your collective success. They resent the manner in which that success is altering their lives, their towns and the ability of their kids to prosper locally.

You and I are too young to know first-hand what happened in 1981. But today's Alberta economy is really not that much more diversified than it was then. There may not be a 'bust' in the next few months. But the days of heady unrestrained growth are very hopefully coming to an end soon. Then watch BA, LH and even MX contemplate reducing or withdrawing service. Again, in some cases.

I'm not even sure if they fly to any cities in North America period. Just JFK perhaps?
