How Fast Is LH Installing PTV's?

Fri Dec 14, 2007 7:26 am

I'm flying ARN-FRA-ORD and back this winter. Both long haul segments will be on an A333. From what I've heard, they are among the first planes in the LH fleet to get PTV's, and I was just wondering how big you think the chance is that I will get PTV's at one of my flights? I'm flying out on Dec 26th and home on Jan 6th.

That's great! Were you on that flight? If so, how did you like their IFE system? It's AVOD, isn't it?

As of last week, 6 of the 10 A333s had been completed. All 10 should be done by Jan 1, so your chances are pretty good. Good Luck!!!

I wonder if the IFE system has Tetris on it? I'd never leave my seat if it had that

The air in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious because it's the same the angels breathe.

I believe the A330-300 and A340-600 are the only long-haul aircraft in their fleet to have PTVs installed at the current moment.

The Middle East and the United States. I believe most are actually based at MUC?

The decision still has not been made on the A343s yet. I think LH is waiting to see how easily and cost effectively they can install the PTVs on the A333s and A346s first before they decide. I'm sure they'll also take pax feedback into account. The A333s and A346s came delivered with seats that were ready to accept the PTVs, so the A343s would require an entirely new seat to add in the PTVs (I believe). I sure hope they do. Just a hunch, but I do not expect to see any PTVs in the 744s.

Apparently those are D-AIKA, KD, KE, KF, KH, KG, HE

About the 747s, possibly the 11 newer ones will see a refit; the 18 olders ones (which might be replaced by 748s anyway) will probably not be refitted. Just my guess.

A German aviation forum. I've not been able to verify this information yet.

I read on Lufthansa's website that they are refitting their entire longhaul fleet with PTVs... maybe they are just doing the aircraft in stages?? 333/346 then 343/744?

On the Acars flight log you can guess when this retrofit was done:

D-AIKA Nov. 8-9-10
D-AIKE Oct. 29-30-31 / Nov. 1-2
D-AIKF Nov. 3-4-5-6
D-AIKH Dec. 3-4-5-6-7
D-AIKG Nov. 26-27-28-29-30

D-AIKD had already PTVs in Y since last summer. So currently 6 A333 have PTVs in Economy class.

These planes have flown recently to:
DTW, ORD, MCO, DOH, PHL, MCT, SAH, RUH, JED, ASM, AUH, BAH, DMM, KWI, CCU, ASB, GYD, ABV, CAI

Anyway, the A333 not featuring PTVs are flying randomly to these destinations. For example ORD has seen D-AIKB and D-AIKC recently.

I'm really looking forward to try their IFE system. Has anyone here tried it?

Where are they with the installation on the A346's? Are they complete?

Back in October, I flew on D-ABVS (B744) and I noticed a small case beneath the seats with the right size to hold the IFE box. Wonder if it already has the PTVs installed?
The good thing, if what I saw is what I think it is, is that there would be only one IFE box beneath the 3-seat rows and two boxes beneath the 4-seat rows.
How is it looking on the rest of the 744s?

That small case on the 744s is not for an IFE box for PTVs. Apparently there are boxes as a control unit transmitting signals to the plane systems, such as the reading light, audio and video signals, etc. Maybe an a.netter can give more details.

Currently only 1 A346 is equipped with PTVs which is D-AIHE. First the remaining 4 A333 without PTVs will get them, and the next stage will be the A346. D-AIHE went tech a few days ago, but currently it is "back on track" on its way to DEN.
