Short-haul Routes In Europe... On Long-haul Planes

Fri Dec 14, 2007 10:59 am

I know there are some routes in Europe where a long-haul plane operates the flight, usually as an add-on to a long-aul flight - for example, LHR-AMS with KLM (A330), LHR-Athens with Olympic (A340).

What other routes are there there where this applies -- specifically, where you can just book the short-haul (whichever Freedom that is)? I think SIA used to offer a 744 flight From Switzerland to London or something?

LH flies FRA-LHR with A300, and they have few other routes with A300.

I'm not sure if it is still the case but you used to be able to book Ethiopian between London and Rome I think.

Most flights here in the Middle East are done with long haul planes. A flight on Emirates from Dubai to Bahrain will be with a 777-300ER for example. Most of the airlines here don't have smaller single isle planes.

The 8.45am flight from MAD-LHR is operated by BA with a 767.

Also, there are many MAD-BCN flights in A340's, not the 'puente aéreo' shuttle, but regular flights that are coming or going from and to South America.

And MAD-FCO can be done in a 744 with Thai -it is a pitty the crew do not wear their exotic uniform on this flight.

Oh, I almost forgot. There is a great flight between MAD and FRA available with LAN on a A340. Usually very cheap, with good catering and PTV's!!  Wink

I hope this info offers you some other options!

Lufthansa use the A300-600 primarily on short-haul routes (except for Pakistan) and I would call the 300-600 in LH config for a long-haul plane

Both BA with their 767s and LH with their A300s fly quite a number of short haul European flights with these aircraft aside those alreadty mentioned. LHR-FCO and LHR-LCA are other notable BA 767 routes.

CYs A332 flights from LHR-LCA and PFO also spring to mind.

Daily MAD-FRA-MAD on LA A343.
Once weekly MAD-FRA-MAD on IB A343 on Sundays.

Both are available for separate booking and need not be part of a longhaul ticket.

DUB-SNN flights are still available with EI and they operate A330-300s on those generally.

One-way fares are pretty good, approx 50EUR all in. You could try a hop from Dublin to Shannon in relative comfort on an A330-300 and then fly back in a B737-800 with the blue and yellow interior!
Most Flown:- G-BUVA (20 Flights), EI-DEB (12 Flights), EI-JFK (11 Flights)

QF using 763 on SYD - MEL/BNE purely domestic ops.
QF using 744 on SYD - BNE (or maybe the other way round - can't recall). That flight then continues on to LAX. Domestic pax can catch this flight, but it dep/arr at respective international terminals. Pax receive a Domestic Air Pass to get them past passport control/customs/quarantine.

SR used to operate the MD11 GVA-ZHR (though I'm not sure when this flight continued on to. I flew that bird in June 1997, My first and thus far, last time in MD-11.

SQ does MXP-BCN-MXP with a 77W. EK does Malta via Larnaca, that's with a widebody and it's technically European. EK did Nice via Rome for a time (I think.)

743's fly multiple MEL-PER-MEL and SYD-PER-SYD flights, as do the 763's. This might be 4 hours long, but there are plenty of 4 hour long European routes that will be accounted for in this thread.

Hi!

TP normally uses "heavy metal" on flights from LIS to ORY and to LHR at least once a week. Until now TP used to fly with the A310-300, but now it's possible that they'll use the A330-200's on those flights. In the past I know that TP also used the L1011-500 Tristar and even the 747 did some flights in Europe.

OA use a A340 daily to LHR and sometimes a A300-600 too. The A300 is now on the Paris runs I think.
BA also use twice daily 767-300ERs to ATH, as well as LCA, IST and DME.

I've been meaning to start a new thread about this, but I may as well ask in this one. What's going to happen to those short haul BA 767s? How long will they be flying for? Will they get updated interiors? Will they eventually be replaced by 787s?
I'd rather die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather, not terrified and screaming, like his passengers

Hi!

Regarding SR, my brother in January 1980 flew from GVA to ZRH on a SR DC-10!!! SR690/691 to LIS were ZRH/LIS/GVA/ZRH, so if you were in GVA, to fly back to LIS you had to pick any SR flight that was doing GVA/ZRH...it could be a DC-8/DC-9/DC-10 or even a 747 I guess!!!

Not anymore. This was done for aircraft repositioning for LX/SR's GVA-JFK flight. his however changed, as planes are now being swapped in New York, ie. the aircraft that operated GVA-JFK then operates one of the JFK-ZRH flights back and vv.

TAP fly their A310-300s from LIS to the Azores and Madeira, likewise SATA also operate on this route with the same equipment. I wonder if TP will use the A332 on these flightsd once the A310s have gone, or it the flight will be A32S operated instead.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but don't THY fly into LHR with the A343 and A332?

Are there any US airlines that currently extend service beyond LHR/ Gatwick to European airports?

Also- not in context with the original thread- I think that FedEx and UPS also extend flights from their major bases at CDG and DUS? to other European airports. I'm not sure if these onward flights are made with US registered aircraft, and/or US based crews, or whether there are separate European operated feeders that do this (anyone know?).

At LHR we also regularly get Tarom's A310.

We also get the occasional special visitor (which I enjoy more than the regulars), ie LH 330, KL 772, IB 346, AY M11

I have also seen BMI use their 332s on domestic runs to MAN and GLA.

RE: Short-haul Routes In Europe... On Long-haul Planes

Quoting Sevenforeseven (Reply 43):
TWA used to fly LHR to BRU utilising a B747-100 (A long time ago).

TWA also flew BCN-MAD on B747 and L1011, also NCE-BCN on B767 (during Olympics at Barcelona 92) and finally BCN-LIS on B747 and B757 (with traffic rights!)

Cheers  Wink

But they wouldn't have had traffic rights on that cabotage sector.

Of course not! They did it for years while Spain's domestic market was regulated, so IB was the owner of the world's best route MAD-BCN-MAD... I don't think TWA had eve dared to ask for rights.
