Bangkok Airways Dumps 717 - Favors A319s

Tue Dec 18, 2007 5:24 pm

Bangkok Airways (BKP) announced they are returning all Boeing 717s to lessors as they take delivery of Airbus A319s. Earlier this year, BKP agreed to lease seven of the twin-engine Airbus from ILFC to launch new services and replace all four of the B717s. The airline indicated if favored the A319's six hour flight endurance capability over the 717's four.

A319s are larger planes, not straight replacements. They are 33% bigger with 50% more range. I can understand why they want the A319s, as they were designed for different missions.

If anyone read the FlightGlobal article, it said that 2 were likely going to SpanAir. Although it seems a tad odd that they're going to Miami to be refurbished before being sent back to Europe. OTOH, perhaps the lessor has a vendor it uses there for lease return acceptance (similar to GECAS taking certain 737s back at Ardmore, OK).

I've been on Bangkok Airways 717 once BKK-HKT, rather cramped seating but lovely service otherwise. Have to say 717 looks better than 319.

That's always a possibility, as the bulk of their 717 fleet is leased (FL did some sale and lease back deals several years back for some liquidity.), and some of those leases could be up in the near future.

That would be Sargent Avborne. I believe their MIA facility is the only facility in the world that does major works, checks, overhauls on the 717s. When FL acquired some of the ex-TW fleet, they were sent there for checks and other items.

Look out for increased back of clock flying...

domestic flying pretty much switches off 2200 til 0600, so I think we'll see a lot more flying to places in North Asia, secondary Chinese cities and so forth...

Great news for a great airline..

Domestic or international routes? They currently fly an A320 to FUK in direct competition with TG, in terms of price, schedule and service - all benefits to the passenger.

Domestic routes during the day, with back of clock (2200 to 0600) operations internationally.

Further expansion into Japan, China, Korea etc.

FUK is a long stretch, and operates with a payload penalty...

Flew on the 319 into Samui a few weeks ago, from HKG though. It must however have at least some BKK-USM sectors in order to position for that flight.

I take it that PG will hold onto most, if not all of its ATRs.
if that's the case, I suspect USM-BKK flying will form at least 50% ofthe flying for the A319s.
Having been to USM a number of times, there are certain times when multiple A319 flying would be justified.

Eg. Most TG and other Europe flying arrives BKK 0500 - 0700, meaning most people connect around 0800 - 1000.
Alternatively, most European departing traffic connects ex-BKK around 2300 - 0100, therefore justified multiple A319 fling around 1900 - 2100 ex-Usm.

It would appear that the A319 operates on the following routing.

BKK-USM-HKG-USM-SIN-USM-BKK.

On the days that the HKG isn't operated, the aircraft has an extra rotation USM-BKK-USM, before returning to USM for SIN sector.

So usually 0630 departure ex-BKK is A319.

sample:

PG 109 BKK 06:30 USM 07:35

PG 803 08:20 USM HKG 12:40

PG 804 HKG 13:40 USM 15:50

PG 961 USM 16:35 SIN 19:20

PG 962 SIN 20:10 USM 20:50

PG 192 USM 22:00 BKK 23:05

Either way, I'm looking forward to taking some shots at USM which is a brilliant small airport. I'm also tying to persuade the boss to allow me to take a day trip to HKT for some photography.

In the States, FL, HA & YX fly the 717; which coincidentally where the majority of these planes.

Out of the 156-717s that are built and still flying (the original prototype has since been scrapped):
FL has 87
YX has 25
HA has either 10 or 11 717s which are striclty used for their inter-island-hopper service (they did originally have 13, but 2 or 3 of them returned (and during their BK period).

In short, 122 or 123 of these birds are strictly used in the States.

Other carriers, not already mentioned, that currently fly the 717 are JetStar (though they will be retiring the type soon if not already IIRC), Quantaslink & Pembroke.

Quoting JIWNCO (Reply 19):

Why, the 717 seems to suit HA well for its inter-island-hopper routes.

Having flown on the 319 and the 717 in the last couple of weeks, the legroom in the 319 is significantly greater. The 717 was uncomfortable on the USM-BKK sector but the 319 felt fine on the 3hr HKG-USM sector. I'm 6'3'' so i notice!

Ok, but 144 seats on an A319 is just 1 row less than on the ultra low cost configs (Easyjet, Cebu Pacific).

717s have different seats, the original ones and the ex-TW ones. Both very tight though.

On the days that the HKG isn't operated, the aircraft has an extra rotation USM-BKK-USM, before returning to USM for SIN sector.

Yes, I agree, as stated above. USM-HKG operate M*W*F*S frm memory, so days in between, expect extra USM-BKK flying.

Looks like someone needs to update their website then......

No you had the link to the right one. That is the component repair facility. Used to be owned by the same company until Sargent bought it a couple of years ago. They just kept Avborne as part of the name.

Avborne Heavy Maintenance has its own website here:
