Delta Orders 2 More 777s

Thu Dec 20, 2007 11:58 pm

http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

Any idea which type of 777s these are? My guess is -200LR

Looks like they have another long-haul route they are interested in.

Edit:

Possible future 777 route structure:

8 777-200ER
daily ATL-TLV
daily ATL-DXB
daily ATL-ICN
daily ATL-NRT

10 777-200LR
daily ATL-JFK-BOM
daily ATL-JNB
daily ATL-PVG
?daily ATL-JFK-DEL?
?daily ATL-LAX-SYD?

Let's hope oil doesn't hit $100, the global economy doesn't tank, there isn't another dreadful terrorist attack, demand for air travel stays strong and Delta isn't stuck with a huge debt load while airlines like United are financially conservative, update what little fleet they have and get the most airtime they can out of their metal.

Time will tell which strategy works.

Here's the kicker though. United has a very sizable 777 fleet. I think something like 30 ER's. Delta currently has 8. They need the airplanes and I think that it can only do them good.

Don't know what advantage there would be using a 77L over a ER on this route? Is there still talk of ATL-SYD direct?
How good is it?

But doesn't Delta have a ton more 767s than the rest of the world combined?

I don't think these are an addition to the eight already announced. Boeing's website previously reported that Delta had six 777-200LRs on order. These are the two that were announced several months ago, however, it wasn't on Boeing's website until recently.

daily ATL-PVG

ATL-PVG is going to the 772ER from the ATL-JFK-BOM-JFK-ATL......i also think that the ATL-JNB will stay on the 764 via DKR for a while (much bigger fish in Asia) i would also think ATL-BOM and ATL-DEL (without JFK) is possible

also note if DL goes to SYD it will be nonstop from ATL(why would they go to LAX and deal with UA and QF)

GCM has it 8034nm
and boeing has the 77Ls range at 9500(rounded its like 9432nm or something like that without the 3 tanks BTW)
there is also 1500nm of left over range so I'm sure it could do it) (note i dont want to here there isnt the O&D in ATL for it Delta can make it work)

edit:my bad PVG not PEK

And it's not helping them on some of their longer flights. Some routes they can't even operate because it's so out of reach, and others, make tech stops daily. There's a vast difference between the 763ER and 777ER/LR.

True. Even in a downturn, DL needs the 777s. It would park MD80s and older 757s and 763s but continue to take delivery of the 777s, and defer some of the 738s.

ATL-PEK

When did you get the idea we're flying to Beijing? Delta was awarded ATL-PVG route authority.

We want ATL-HKG. Look for it.

DL does not have the right to fly ATL-PEK. Only ATL-PVG. Also, I heard that ATL-JNB was on Delta's "wish list" for the 777-200LR, when they made the original announcement.

Does HKG require special rights to fly to? similar to PVG or PEK?

shit my bad i wanted them to get ATL-PEK and ATL-PVG so i guess i just make it up lol(dont worry it will happen the next time around)

(also look for ATL-SIN DL has asked for slots to SIN,SYD,HKG and NRT) (but the other NRT is for JFK)http://atlanta.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2007/04/30/daily3.html?page=3

No, three aux tanks are required for the 9430 nm full pax range. With no aux tanks, the full pax (no cargo) range drops to about 8800 nm.

But why order more of a soon to be obsolete airframe? DL can only do so many routes with their sizeable fleet of 763ERs. With many of the routes you see above, larger frames with longer ranges are required.

Quoting DeltaL1011man (Reply 7):
ATL-PVG is going to the 772ER from the ATL-JFK-BOM-JFK-ATL

I think that eventually this one might even go 773ER if DL decides the route does well enough to warrant it and further amending their 777 order with Boeing. ATL-PVG can be done with a 772ER anyhow. But ATL-SIN and ATL-HKG will need the 772LR as will any India Flights (BOM, DEL from either ATL or JFK). If DL does service to SYD it will be from ATL rather than LAX since California is already well covered by both UA & QF.
JFK-BOM: 772LR
ATL-JNB: 772LR eventually
ATL/JFK-CPT: 764ER fuel stop @DKR
JFK-NRT: 772ER
JFK-DEL: 772LR
