Airtran/National

Mon Sep 18, 2000 11:57 am

Airtran should buy National.

1. They share almost every city they both fly to.
2. Airtran would then be coast to coast
3. Upgrade Airtran Business Class to National regular service/cheap fares in the back of the plane.
4. 717's and 757's ...
5. Beats the heck out of TWA for a partner.

What do you think?

NO!
My reasons:
1) AirTran focuses on routes less than 1,000 miles long, while National focuses on trans-cons

2)AirTran is a budget airline with no meal service, National has meal/light snack service on all flights

3)AirTran has 1-2" smaller seat pitch than National.

4)National probably wouldn't sell out now that they are just beginning flights.

5)AirTran flies the 712, National flies the 752.

The good mergers I think would be Frontier/Vanguard, and Midway/National.

Your also forgetting who is putting up lots of the start-up capital for National. It's the Casino's in Vegas. I believe that National is a way to get people to Vegas and away from the nationwide Indian Gaming that's on the upswing.

Air Tran and National are new carriers who need to develop and become more situated in their markets before considering mergers. Each has tremendous promise and may become majors.

I predict Air Tran becoming a major by 2010. They will overtake Alaska in RPMs very soon and can easily become America's #10 carrier.

What's in a name? Would Vegas casino's that are investing in National want to run an airline named AirTran into Vegas with potential high rollers on their planes? Just a thought, Air Tran is a hokey name.

What about in a few years, after AirTran expands and JetBlue grows its markets, they could merge to become a new Eastern Airlines? It would certainly create more competition along the East Coast with modern, state-of-the-art aircraft. The B717 and the A320 would be a great mix.

The whole purpose of National is to shuttle people and their money to and from Las Vegas. If you start adding hubs all over the place, you lose your original goal.

I would love to see National grow. I think that they should also invest in more 752s, and 738s.

My 2 Cents

One major reason I see in this idea is that National won't last. Remember the economy is strong now, but when it goes bad tourism in Vegas drops. A bad economy means that the middle class stops going out there. If that happens for a long period of time National won't make it. The majors will always be okay to serve the people of Vegas. National is all geared toward the gamblers that want to get to Vegas for cheap. Tourism out there will level off eventually for a while and may drop. National will get killed by this.

I'd like to see National continue on it's own.
National was born because many of the majors serving Las Vegas reduced their frequency, but there are more and more hotel rooms available there.
National also did some smart route decisions by doing trans con services via LAS. So if they can't get people to go to Vegas they can still fly them to another destination. Nationals network continues to grow and additional aircraft joining the fleet. I have flown with them and loved the experience, I wish them well in the future.
