Can Anyone Tell Me What I Saw At BUR Today?

Tue Sep 19, 2000 10:35 am

Hello All,
I live in Los Angeles and this morining I was in the San Fernando Valley (or "The Valley" or "Over the Hill" for all those other LA residents) this morning. It was about 7.45am and a 727-200 came flying over, it looked like it had come from BUR (I wasn't in Burbank), however I know the path well and it was not from VNY. I was in the car and only got a glance at it, however it looked almost like a Mexicana 727. The tale was all blue (but not solid) and that wrapped around the fusalage and it appeared to have a white triangle type logo on the tail. It was turning and I couldn't see any markings. But what would a Mexicana be doing at BUR? No airline really operates 727s at BUR, UA used to and FedEx mostly uses A300/310s, also those planes fly in the evening. So I was just wondering if anyone had any info on what this was, I was just curious.

Thanks for your time...

Hello,

Sounds weird! I also live in L.A. and a long time ago(6-7 years ago) I saw an American 727 landing at BUR. I thought it was really weird. Maybe it was substituting an MD-80 or something, but it wasn't using the normal landing runway but the one that is used for takeoffs. I've never flown out of BUR, maybe one day.

Hi LatinPlane

Oh an AA 727, wow. That's different! Yeah a MD-80 must have broken down or something. The path that you saw it on, normally used for takeoff, is used when the Santa Anas or other strong wind comes. Then in return the Landing path is used for takeoff. Flying from BUR isn't terribly interesting in the fact that there usually aren't many other planes to see. However you do get to board by stairs and walk out on the tarmac, always fun. Once I got to use the rear stairs on an AS MD-80, oh the little things in life. It is also a lot less crowded than LAX.

Thanks

It was probably 727 operated by the United States Postal Service...they have a large fleet of 727-100s.

Hi, N960AS

The weirdest thing of all was that it wasn't just landing from West to East,(As any other regular windy day) it was actually landing the other way around from East to West on the take off runway. I know that I hardly ever visit Burbank but this totally caught me off guard.

Out of nowhere, the 727 came out and made a sharp right turn to avoid the mountains and landed as if it were something out of Kai Tak. That was a very interesting one in a lifetime opportunity. Onfortunatly I was driving on San Fernando Blvd and I couldn't see the 727 after it landed.

Best regards,

FedEx

FedEx has a flight every Monday-Friday that departs BUR approx. 7:45am for LAX. It is the ONLY 727 that serves BUR on a regular basis now. FedEx also serves BUR with a 7:30pm departure for MEM, with a A306. UAL recently quit 727 service and the US Postal Service has NEVER had a flight into BUR. Jeff

Oh ok thanks everyone...
It probably was FedEx, I thought they just had an A306 flight at night. I've never seen that 727 before at 7.45am. Why would it fly to LAX? What is the point of that? When does that 727 arrive, and does it come from LAX? Oh btw, jabpilot, do you know why UA stopped 722 service, it wasn't there for that long either and they replaced it with the regular boring old 737, you would think they woul dreplace it with an A320. I remember a while ago there used to be UA 757s, but thats a way long time ago.

Here's another odd BUR sighting. I work at the airport and just saw a Pan Am 727-200 with winglets land at about 9:50pm monday night. The strangest thing is that its actually parked at the passenger terminal at gate A-9 ( usually charter flights park opposite the passenger terminal at the Mercury Air center). I've seen a Pan Am 727 at BUR before this year but I think that was the one chartered by either John McCain or Bill Bradley during the primaries.

As for UAs 727s they were only temporary for a little over a month on a schedule change on the BUR - DEN morning flight (returning in the evening and overnighting). That flight is usually a 737-500.

Hi 737-990,
A Pan Am 722, that is really weird. I'm guessing you work for AS at BUR, am I right? Well anyways, on that subject I have a question for you. I'm a frequent AS flyer and I know they are getting rid of their MD-80s (sad, the airline has no idea what they're doing) but do you know when the last MD-80 flight is expected to be. It'd be nice to get on that. Anyways AS and AA MD-80s are great at BUR, they break up the monotony of the 737s (not that AS doesn't fly those, shame). Anyways I'm a big MD-80 fan and I hope they stick around for a while. So right now is AS operating 4 MD-80 and 2 734 flights a day at BUR?
Thanks again.
PS I think there have been USPS 727s, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the info. on the PanAm landing Monday night. What timing though, I was at the airport until about 9pm, so I just missed it. Last week there were 2 private 727's that visited BUR, one belonging to the Cayman Islands Government and the other a company in San Francisco. Jeff

Fed Ex A300

Wed Sep 20, 2000 3:20 am

Every day at 7:30 pm a Fed Ex A300 takes off out of BUR. It is an amazing site to see such a big aircraft just make it out of that airport and climb slowly over Burbank and NoHo. I would see it every day taking the 101 e. home from work. Other than that Burbank has some pretty boring aircraft, love the convenience of flying out of there though.

Another Pan Am 727-200 is at BUR right now, it also has winglets (N364PA). It is at the airline ramp once again. Drive down Hollywood Way by the gas station that Southwest almost took out, what a view!

Hello N960AS,
You know, I happen to work near Burbank Airport, and during the morning there's a lot of planes taking off around 6-9 A.M. As for the sighting of that 727, well yesterday I saw that same exact plane that you mentioned. The first thing I figured was that it was a United plane. If I am correct, United has been using the 727-200 for a flight to Denver. Usually it would arrive around 9 or 10 o'clock in the night, and stay over. It was grey as you mentioned, so I would probably figure that it was a United plane.

I remember in the early 90's I saw an Alaska B-722 take off of Runway 8, I thought that was pretty cool. But as listed before I am also a big MD-80 fan and they make spotting at BUR a bit more interesting. By the way does anyone know were the UPS 757 comes from, I always see it coming in south of Bur and making a right turn to intercept the ILS for 8. From the direction it came I don't think it came from Louisville, but then again I just may be stupid.

Have a nice day  .

BAe-146

Wed Sep 20, 2000 7:49 am

Does any airline operate BAe-146's in So. Cal anymore, I use too see a lot of them in the 80's when PSA operated them and then USAir. Tristar came in and operated them, but I guess they went under. If anyone has any input I would appricate it.

Hello N960AS,

Well, you guess correct, I do work at AS. I also have an update on the Pan Am 727 at BUR, It's Al Gore's press plane (Air Force Two must have landed later, its currently at the Murcury Air Center). Its due to leave later in the evening on tuesday.

As for AS retiring of its MD-80s, although its inevitable there is no set time yet for it. I have heard (nothing offical) anywhere from 2005 to 2007. Currently AS has 34 MD-80s, with outstanding firm orders for 11 737-900s and 8 more -700s, not enough to replace all of the MD80s. So cheer up, you still got a couple of years left for MD-80 travel. On a side not the MD-80 is a better A/C in BUR than the 737-400, this from an operational perspective. The 737-400 gets weight restricted easier with hot weather, where as the MD-80 is better suited for "hot and high" operations.

Hey FedEXHeavy - No operators of BAe-146's in SoCal or NoCal anymore. USAir withdrew them when they left California back in the early 90's.

Hey 737-990
I want to thank AS and AA for making BUR spotting more interesting. I'm glad AS made the afternoon SEA flight back into a MD-80 flight. Once about 4 years ago I was flying on to PDX on one of your MD-80s and there were winds and it was Thanksgiving, I think and we had a full load so we had to fly to OAK and refeul and then go on to PDX, so much for hot and high. Well I'm happy the MD-80 isn't going for at least 5 years.   I know they like the 737 up in Alaska, but down here I think the MD-80 is better. You agree? I think it looks great there at B5 next to all those UA 737s. I'm flying on AS agian soon and I made sure they were MD-80 flights (I guess I'm the opposite of the rest of the world, although with those 737 rudders...). Well I hope AS keeps MD-80s at BUR, maybe a 737 would be ok, a little different from a 734.
Oh Al Gore's plane, that is pretty interesting.
Thanks for your responses...
~N960AS
PS, The AS livery looks great on MD-80s, but not as good on 737s.

To FedExHeavy:

Wed Sep 20, 2000 3:17 pm

UPS does not come in from one location on a daily basis. The UPS752 mainly comes in from LAX, DSM and ONT (that's when you see the southern arrival) amongst many other cities all over the country.

Another Interesting Note....

Thu Sep 21, 2000 3:43 am

Yesterday we had a C-141 in BUR as a limo transporter for Gore. What an unusual site at this 737-300 dominated airport.
