THY- Turk Hava Yollari
They Hate You!
While stationed at Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey this acronym was humourously referred to by some who had to fly on THY. I flew on them and didnt have a problem whatsoever, although the departure angle in our 727-200 seemed a little steep with lots of people praying with the worry beads out calling for Allah. Upon landing at Istanbul, the moment the tires became extended on final approach, the soft calls for Allah again permeated the cabin as our jet came ever lower to the Bosporus Sea, fishing boats passing by, terrified looks in the eyes of some. As soon as the tires screeched upon the runway, seeminglyeveryone stood up and applauded! I was laughing to myself and found it hard to contain my humor in all of it. As I exited the airplane, The flight attendant who came frantically towards the rear of the aircraft trying to get people to sit down saw me again..she knew why I was laughing and she returned the laughter with a wink and a smile. That was one of the funniest and best flights I ever had. I have to go back to visit Turkey sometime, I really miss it.
