Air Zimbabwe A340 500

Sun Aug 21, 2011 8:20 am

http://mg.co.za/article/2011-08-19-s...we-ready-to-soar-with-new-aircraft

Is this likely to be accurate - are those A340 500 MSN886 and MSN894 aircraft finally going to be delivered to Air Zimbabwe this month by Airbus?

Not if the article's talking about receiving A340-200s...

The article clearly means these 2 unused A340-500s. 340-200s would only come second hand but for a quarter of the price.

The only way Zimbabwe will be able to pay for these is if Beijing underwrite them with Dollars for Mugabe's family diamond hoard !

Yeah I would agree. I honestly think this is just like the last time there were reports of Air Zimbabwe were getting 2 A340-500's, its nothing more than hot air!

There is little chance of Air Zimbabwe affording these aircraft, even if they could...what are the chances of these aircraft flying with full loads?

I for one, am gunna believe it when I see it.....no matter who is reporting it!

Considering the less than respectable history of the Mugabe regime I would wonder how willing airbus would be to trade with them, but then again given the chance of offloading these aircraft with Beijing underwriting them....

Just have to deal with the ongoing strikes now! Air Zimbabwe must be longing for some new a/c how old are the 762's?

I too will believe it when I see it, didn't they announce they had ordered IL96's a while back?

Yes it's was in 2005-2006 when they taken delivery of the first MA-60. But, the airline has huge debt and the strike started about one month ago. The best thing, i think it's to re create a new airline. Any news about Fly540 Zimbabwe ??

Every year this rumour circulates and every year absolutely jack shit happens. Like all the other underperforming parastatals in Zimbabwe, Jonathan Kadzura and all the other inept twits on the board of directors, who are aligned to ZANU-PF, are just milking the airline for all its worth until it eventually collapses. Thereafter, it will all be blamed on 'sanctions' just like everything else.

The sooner UM tanks, the sooner Zim will have to open up its airspace, and then, we'll hopefully see BA, EK et al return and provide quality service on international routes.

If you go to the Air Zim website and look at the Board of Directors and their qualifications - you realise that the airline has no hope.

Are there still EU/US sanctions in place against Zimbabwe? If there are, would these prevent UM from obtaining new(ish) Airbus frames, seeing as UM is government owned and operated?

Cheers,

IIRC, there are no sanctions against Zimbabwe, rather there are sanctions applying to certain individuals in Zimbabwe. Of course given the tendency of one of those individuals to treat UM aircraft as his own toys I suppose it could be argued that those sanctions should apply in this case, but I don't think that technically they would.

No more A340-200 indeed. However, Airbus can still build a -300 as well. But we are talking -500 anyway.

I doubt whether an A340-500 would be a suitable aircraft for UM: does any of UM's route really need this aircraft and can UM fill the seats & cargo? A B767-300ER would be more suitable?

If not mistaken, all the A345s and A346s on order have already been built and no more are likely to be sold.

There is never a straight story out of Zimbabwe and HRE got it's (not anymore - but) new airport about 30
years after the plan was announced at a Trade Fair in BUQ.
If 2 A340's of the-500 variety are really in the mix, perhaps they are the 2 leased ones that got Arik
started?

As an ex Rhodesian, I'd love to see any plane with Air Rhodesia on it. As things are now I doubt anyone would lend a paper plane to that scum Mugabe. As far as BA or EK I would love to see them grace Salisbury, after Mugabe is hiding in a hole in the ground with Quadafi, Hussein style. I think for the foreseeable future, if one has to go there, SAA via JNB is the best alternative, or fly to Zambia and see magnificent Victoria falls from that side.

Anyhow, the future of Air Zim, and thus this alleged Airbus deal, is now even more in doubt, as the government has refused to bail them out, as they did last time.

Quoting The Zimbabwe Herald:
..."Government has been reluctant to come in and the airline will have to find its way. We have been trying all along and we continue to look for the money elsewhere," he said.

Meanwhile, Airzim workers who have been stranded in Malaysia for the past three weeks alleged that the national airline had not taken care of them to their satisfaction.
A source that spoke on condition that he is not named said they had been chucked out of a hotel after the national airline failed to pay their accommodation fee....

Yeah cos BA always flew 777s into Harare until '08 and they were always half empty, right?!!

Look, lets take a traditional route like say, LHR/LGW & HRE. Between UM and its unreliability, ET and its overpriced fares and old equipment, KQ and its crappy 3am flights via LUN, and EK with its prestige and classiness, who do you think most Zimbabweans abroad will choose when flying home from Europe and elsewhere?

As a frequent flyer on ET between HRE-ADD-FCO, i can tell you that the ET flights are always jam packed, yet people still lament the loss of BA on the route, even though they charged well above UM, ET, KQ etc. Why? Cos folks here are tired of lousy service and ultra cramped conditions on long haul routes.

The irony is, that EK actually did express interest in opening HRE-DXB but were chased away by the idiots in the Ministry of Transport who knew that added competition would signal the demise of UM. Source here.

IIRC, They used to have a BAE 146, (parked in 2006). Perhaps they should bring it back.

IMO, it would be closer to the capacity that is needed in Zimbabwe

Airbus does no longer offer the A342, after the MTOW increase of the A343 this has the same range. They offered the A340-8000, but nobody wanted it.
If you really would want a dozen of them, Airbus might still be able to build them, if the line wasn't booked out for years to produce all the A332 - which now have practically the range of the original A342.

My impression of the interst of Mugabe in the A345 is that he is afraid to be imprisoned in a good part of the world if he ever has to land there, therefore he wants a quad to be safer to be able to stay airborne until he reaches a safe place like Belarus or China.
