Reno Air Race Crash

Sat Sep 17, 2011 12:22 am

Just read that a P-51 has crashed into the stands at the Reno National Championship Air Races. Reports are still coming in but so far it has been confirmed the pilot died.

There's now a video of that unfortunate crash on YouTube:

Pretty frightening, too.

Here's a report and video (same as above) of the accident, be warned it's pretty intense:

It's unfortunate these accidents happen, but it is the nature of the sport.

CNN is reporting (8:30 PM EDT) that the FAA is on the scene, NTSB on the way. It appears the plane crashed near nose down into an area in front of a grandstand. Apparently there are multiple fatalites and serious injuries, no numbers at this time. This looks bad.

Absolutely terrible. A number of outlets are now citing sources that describe this as a "mass casualty" situation with something like 100 people injured...here's the link from CNN.

Condolences to everyone affected, this is awful.

I saw some new video and the worse part was that the impact debris from the crash sprayed through part of the spectator area. The crash scene reminds me so much of what happened from the Su-27 crash in 2002 that killed 77 and injured 543....

Here's one that shows more clearly what happened to the plane:

http://youtu.be/nTzX35wOGas

You need a youtube account though to watch it.

What happened was very strange looking at this video, the plane abruptly pitches up and then rolls inverted, then it basically makes a straight dive into the ground.

I've been going to the air races for 15+ years and from what I understand pitching up is a direct response to any kind of emergency at the air races. What seems to be the buzz around here is that a portion of the P51's tail separated. As a result, it caused the planes tail to pitch up, overriding the pilots attempt to climb.

From what witnesses saw, the plane was backing out of the race in a pattern associated with the pilot discovering a mechanical problem. Unfortunately, the pilot lost all control.

Doesn't describe what I see on the last video I posted at all. But I guess as always we won't really know till the NTSB says the magic words.

I'm just repeating what I've heard, I honestly don't have the knowledge to make any kind of assessment. What I keep hearing though, is what I said. The plane lost a portion of its tail, causing the tail to pitch up, nose down. This overrode the pilots attempt to climb out as soon as he discovered there was a problem. To me, this general theory seems plausible given the planes movement seen in some of the videos.

Yes he did. Look closely apparently they put a tourniquet on it. Limb losses have a pretty high survival rate actually.

I find it hard to believe that was the sole reason for the crash. There has to be more to it.

I hope not. The media need to realize yes, this is dangerous... but the pilots are choosing to participate, and the spectators are choosing to watch. Things happen, and you deal with them. I'm all for minimizing risk, but to completely eliminate something like this would be a shame.

This was very sad though. My Brother-in-law was up there within a few hundred feet of it and I don't think I've ever heard him as shaken as he was when he called to let us know he was OK and that includes 4 years ago when his best friend was in a mid-air up there during practice (amazingly he survived).

Why? Can you imagine the force potentially on a trim tab doing 400+ MPH (closer to 500 really) and then it suddenly falling off. Even a slight change in control force at that speed is going to cause a massive change in flight direction. Entirely possible that it's the sole cause for the crash.

Missing trim tab, extended tailwheel, no fire. May or may not be indicators, but at this point the cause is irrelevant. Time will reveal facts, and appropriate actions will be taken; but now is the time to give support those who need it.

It's either missing or deflected downward where you can't see it. At the speeds these Unlimited racers are operating at, it could be fluttering, if the linkage was disconnected. In any event, it's a major failure if that's indeed the case.

Cessna lost the prototype 340 on it's maiden flight in 1970 because an elevator trim tab linkage bolt fell out. The chase aircraft watched as it started an abrupt near vertical climb. It then rolled inverted and dove straight into the ground. The descriptions of this tragic accident reminded me very much of that crash. But of course it's only speculation.

Pretty crazy video. Did anyone else catch that one guy in the red shirt tackle this shit out of some random dude? I watched that part a few times trying to figure out what happened only thing I could see was maybe the guy with the white hat bumped into him accidentally??? then the guy in the red shirt ran after him and tackled him hardcore. Weird. Most graphic part of the video was for sure showing the guy laying there missing his leg. Prayers for all involved.

What I got from this is that it took a very long time for any emergency services to show up on the scene. Way too long. Probably around 5 min and the whole time there were people milling around not helping and just getting in the way. Hell, that guy with his leg cut off was just sitting there 5 min after the accident without any kind of help.

I love airplanes as much as most of us do, but NASCAR/Indy put up fences to keep tires and debris from flying into spectators, hydroplane races keep people well away from where debris can fall, and for the most part airshows keep planes from turning into spectators. This was an accident waiting to happen.

There's no reason the race course needs to have a turn adjacent to spectator stands. The only reason it's there is to be close to people who are watching the event. The difference between race cars and jet boats when compared to airplanes is that when an airplane loses control it better be well away from the people watching the event. In this case the most likely point is in the turn.

I've been involved working at airshows for most of my adult life, and what I saw in that video makes me think that the people that ran this event were no more prepared for an emergency than someone who puts together a monster truck show. It's an understatement to say it's an embarrassment to the aviation community.

, no fire.

Not unusual, a racing plane carries no more fuel than necessary for the race. Fuel is weight and more than needed for the race will slow the plane slightly.

Also the speed and impact angle disperses the fuel so quickly that it does not remain is sufficient concentration to catch fire.

No fire is very normal in a high speed impact which completely shatters the aircraft such as this.
