Landing Separations ... Really?

I heard this on the radio last night ... and had to query the accuracy of either the person being quoted or the reporting. Now that I've found a second source, I'm wondering if the person being quoted is really in the right position.

From The China Post of 6 Oct 2011:

The article is talking about a new ATC system that has been introduced at TPE. I recall that the recommended separation for the A380 is 5 or 6 nm.

Have I missed something?

  I'm slightly confused as well. Maybe we're both just missing the point lol

If my memory serves me correctly, separation for an A380 is anywhere from 4 NM for a following super, to 10 NM for a light a/c.



Edit: Double-checked my facts, it is 10NM, not 8.

Well take LHR for example, where the aircraft call the tower on an 8 mile final. At any one time you can have 3-4 aircraft within that 8 miles, so I would think the clearance is lot lower than 15-20 miles.

The words "distance between landing flights" in the article is a bit confusing. They probably didn't mean the separation on final, but rather the separation in use by the controllers thoughout the control center, probably over the ocean, where radar converage is not appropriate (roughly 200nm and more off the coast of Taiwan).

That being said, i dont know if Taipei FIR's airspace extends that far out over the ocean.
