United 747 At San Francisco Fleet Week

Thu Oct 06, 2011 5:31 pm

Does anyone have any info on United flying at Fleet Week this weekend? The website doesn't list what day and time they will be out there but it does say a United 747 will be included. Last year there was quite a bit of fuss over people thinking it was going for the GG Bridge and such. Tons of videos of it on the web. I wonder if the routing of the 747 will be a bit different this year?

But is the 747 a globe or a tulip?

It would make sense to use a globe 744 with all the rebranding going on.

Last year it was a tulip even though the rebranding was getting under way. I am hoping for a tulip, but am expecting the globe.

This is going to be a fantastic weekend in San Francisco. Beautiful weather, beautiful aircraft, over the most beautiful city and area in the world! Whoever comes out will enjoy themselves!

See you there!

That explains the late ORD arrival last night. Catch the N number?

This should be a great show this year. I had no idea the Canadian Snowbirds were going to be here. Behold, I was walking into work and saw one of their pilots in the UA carousel area. Didn't put A and B together till I saw the planes parked at Plot 41. There are 2 Marine Osprey that arrived Wednesday as well.

I'll be out on the bay Sunday!

The 744 has been a regular at Fleet week. I think it's pretty cool, but a damn headache for those of us who want to do other things in the city.

I've just seen the United 747 (in Continental colours) fly past my office window low over San Francisco bay just north of Pier 39 in the direction of the Golden Gate bridge.

Quite a sight to see the big bird down that low.

Does anyone know what time and day(if not both) this weekend that the 747 will be out flying?

Would be nice next year if they could get Lufthansa to do a few flybys with an A380.

On a related note, what in Hades happened with UA 555 on Thursday night? I picked up a client from that flight, and it was delayed something fierce...was supposed to land at 2215 or so and didn't actually get there until 0200. My pax was a bit disoriented from lack of sleep (couldn't sleep on the flight), but said something about boarding a 757 before they did a last-minute equipment change (so, at least implying that they swapped the pax and bags to the 747 that actually did the flight), then taxiing out to the runway before something went wrong and they had to go back and fix the problem...that was about all I got; would love to hear more about what happened...FWIW one of the workers at SFO told one of my colleagues that all of the bags from UA 555 had arrived on earlier flights...

I love Fleet Week as an observer (combining my two favorite loves: airplanes and boats    ), but I have to say, trying to drive in SF this weekend is going to be extremely unpleasant. Maybe someday I can take the weekend off and enjoy the show...

I've seen that United puts on an open house at SFO...usually opens a 747 and blows a slide, etc. Is this open only to employees?

Employee Only. Many UA employee's were not able to get tickets. And this was the first year SkyWest wasn't offered tickets.

What time does UA do the fly by? I'll be there for most of the afternoon but want to make sure that I don't miss the 74.

What is the easiest way to get there from SFO? I'm familiar with BART but I have no idea what stop to get off at.

Get off BART at Embarcadero and then walk a ways down the Embarcadero (toward Pier 39) until you find a good viewing spot. It'll be crowded, but worth it!

This info could be wrong but it was planned for a globe scheme. Due to mech on one of the B744s it's now a tulip scheme.

Turned out to be a globe. They spent a while orbiting west of the Golden Gate (looked like 3000 ft or so) before their turn came. Forgot to check if they had flap down on all three passes-- lots of flap on the second pass, but on the last one looked like no trailing flaps, but the leading-edge flaps probably were out. Zat sound right? Minimum altitude maybe 300 ft.

As is stated above plus a photo. For those going tomorrow, if they follow the same schedule, the show starts about 12:30 and the 747 come at about 2pm with the Blue Angels on at 3pm.

This was taken from the Marina Green.

Still can't get over the fact that "Chicago's Hometown Airline" does a 744 flyby for San Fran's fleet week, but won't have them do a quick jaunt over Lake Michigan for the Chicago Air & Water Show????

Watched the air show today from Ghiradelli and enjoyed several low passes from the UA 747. Glad UA is still committed to SFO after all these years!

Saw the blues fly over Blackhawk/Danville Saturday in a close formation. Was eating brunch at east ocean seafood on the Emeryville marina and saw them again around 12:30pm.
