From what I've read it may have been batteries and the FBI considers it an accident at this point.

real question is whether or not the battery in baggage was a hazardous good that should have been packed and shipped as freight rather than being sent as checked baggage...had this "accident" occurred in the air, no telling what may have happened.

exactly...I wouldn't be surprised to see the FAA look into this incident to see if the battery was acceptable for transport as baggage. And if it was claimed by the passenger and UA was aware of it. Most people are unaware of the danger potential of items like this when shipped by air. We'll see.

Didn't an Asian freighter go down recently because some batteries exploded/caught on fire?

It's been postulated the UPS 747 was also lost due to a battery-related cargo fire.

There is a lot of energy contained within a battery, particularly lithium batteries.

It doesn't help that the material itself is also flammable (and reacts to water).

Stored and transported properly they are safe. It's when you get out of that realm that bad things can possibly happen.
