I agree, but if you are a member of another alliance then SA)">OW is not a good option. With added costs like baggage etc, people are making use of their premier status. It would be interesting to see the breakdown of BA Transit pax, lots to HKG/USA??

LHR is a STAR focus city, not a hub. The BMI MAN-LHR is known as the fresh air shuttle for good reason, the large connecting market over London is served by BA. airliners.net-ers have a misplaced idea of alliances and their priorities on here. Some of the airlines in the same alliance don't even like each other !

When you say "Most of the major hubs are based on one Alliance" this is true, however it's more accurate to say "one AIRLINE" who happens to be in an alliance, unless the hub is DXB, DOH or AUH! Be careful not to mix the two.

Even Virgin cannot be said to have a hub at Heathrow, it's their main base (technically Gatwick but let's be honest). As to BMI, well there's not too many BD->BD connections and current BD->STAR is better served directly from the UK regions than over LHR. Not ideal for TG, NZ, JJ, MS and the like but BD isn't making any money feeding them!

Huh, I have not flown BA since about 1998, after they lost my bags for 3 days, but I have used LHR several times going up to MAN. Mostly star carriers TG, AC, UA, SQ, VS and then on BMI. Have we all now disappeared? Granted last few trips have seen me use SQ direct (77W via MUC...yuck), KLM and CA via FRA (LH).

Some strange movements on the approach to MAN. A TCX753 flew up over the Peak District, lined up with the runway over Hyde as you do, but it then tracked back South climbing back up to 7,000 feet to enter the Dayne hold? Was the runway shut at short notice for some reason?

I've heard it all now! Yeah there are several inbounds which have done about 7 laps at DAYNE including the LHR shuttle and some which have done 7 laps around the Blackburn area (sorry cannot remember hold name) including Air Transat.

Do you really need the reassurance? It certainly seems to do well for the gold plated Gulf big boys, struggling a bit on the North Atlantic recently though. AA's ORD still on the B757 and DL dumping JFK. Quite why the money flows East is something of a surprise. Would still love to see top 10 connecting destinations on EK. EY and QR by yield. They have to be B787 targets !

Hmmm, SQ's website is strange. It shows no outbound flight from SIN to MAN on the night of Saturday 30th June, but it's back the following Saturday. The return schedule is unaffected so not sure how exactly an SQ B773 gets to MAN to operate back to SIN on Sunday 1st July.

AirBlue flights to Islamabad to be operated via Istanbul rather than Ankara using A321s. Apparently AirBlue also have traffic rights between MAN and IST.

It Probably did! Because there were at least 3 ground staff cars chasing it, not sure if anymore joined in as my view was limited to the AA 767 next to us and the beginning of 23R. Overall I didnt find any problems with the facilities so far, though the walk to T3 could have been a bit shorter. Will report again when I go through MAN again in the new year

Very respectable increase in passenger numbers over the festive period - 6% up on last year. MAN's also stated that there's strong bookings for summer 2012 to the Middle East and North America.

LBA and DSA are virtually shut tonight due to the gusty conditions- a PK A310 and 3 FR 737s have sought refuge from LBA and for the 1st time for ages, a pair of Wizz Air A320s have come in after failing to arrive at DSA.

And some good news coming from TU:
from Wednesday 28th March, there's a weekly service to TUN using A320s: TU948 arr 19.25, TU949 dept 20:15. This in addition to the Saturday service which appears to have a seasonal shift of destination - summer to Enfidha, winter to Tunis; people glancing the arrivals board may have seen this is already in effect.

Remember around 45% of this growth was due to the ash closure bounce back in April and May. In other words the real growth at MAN in 2011 was 3.6% or around 634,000 passengers. The growth at the beginning of 2012 seems to level off at between 60,000 and 70,000 more passengers per month. Maybe we'll see 19.6 millions at the end of 2012?

As per Emirates.com EK22/21 upgraded to B777-300 between July and September, upgraded from A332

This means the 3 daily flights will be operated as follows:

EK21/22 - B777-300
EK17/18 - A380-800
EK19/20 - B777-300ER

I've said for a while that I believe the MAN - Gulf market is like the dot.com bubble of the past, but these reports constantly rebut my beliefs. Staggering, but well done to Etihad for carving out a market against the might of Emirates.

Forget the Robinson's Airport Hotel - high fences and overgrown hedges obstruct the view form the "garden". I recommend you take the 200 bus from the MAN Station to the Airport Viewing Park with departures 16 minutes past the hour between 0916 and 1716 (1616 between 31 Oct and 1 Feb) with return from the AVP every 25 minutes past the hour. If you are getting peckish during your stay at the AVP, I would recommend you walk the six minutes down the Old Wilmslow Road to The Romper.

Regarding the viewing park, I noticed from a visit there over Christmas a note on the TAS shop window that in the spring work will begin on putting a new higher fence there & increasing the height of the viewing mounds accordingly, this is because it will meet the new regulations on the Department for Transport airport security guidelines.
Does anybody have a more exact timetable of when & how long the works will be starting / completed & what disruption will there be to the spotters while this is all going on?
The only info that I can find out about this is on the Manchester Airport website but it has not been updated since last October,

Just making a reservation with Finnair for March, and the results are throwing back the flights as operated by Flybe on an E70.

Has this been announced anywhere whilst I've been hibernating?

Looking at another reservation in June shows it back to Finnair's own metal.

SAS started to fly direct flights between Oslo and Manchester together with the opening of OSL in October 1998. Before that BA was the only airline on the route and before BA took over Dan-Air, Dan-Air was the operator between the two cities. BACon stopped their flights between OSL and MAN on 5 March 2006.
