Early 2012. Although I'd take any dates regarding the 787 with a large grain of salt.

It is my understanding that it will be the second half of 2012 before the first UA 787 is delivered.

That's correct. I went with the first source I found, after digging a little deeper it looks like second half of 2012 is most likely.

UA is planning on taking a number of 787s at once, correct? I heard that they don't want to start operating with 1 or 2, they want a decent-sized subfleet. Did I hear correctly? Any more info on their delivery schedule for the 787s?

I certainly hope they won't send them to BRU with the cramped Y/Y+ layout...  I'll take a UA777 any day above the 9-abreast 787... But I'd love to fly any other airline who puts a normal 8-abreast in Y... Don't want to get a chance to get stuck in cramped cattle class when an upgrade doesn't clear.

The 1st UA 787 is already built (LN 045) can't imagine why it will take almost a year before it get delivered?

I know there is a lot of rework to be done on the 787s still being built but 2nd half 2012 is a long time away. If the first quote is correct, that may answer the other part of the time, they may have several finished waiting for one bulk delivery of 3-5 aircraft...

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal a couple weeks back that was an interview with the head of UA's 787 training program. The article pretty much stated that as we all thought the 787 is going to be in domestic service for about six to eight weeks from EWR and IAH before going overseas.

I think late June / early July is more likely, with international flying to begin in the fall.

I'd rather bet on some heavy domestic routes, for crew training purposes and aircraft familiarization. See AF's A380s on CDG-LHR, SQ on SIN-KUL, and NH's 787 at the moment. Assuming they are based out of IAH, those could be EWR, ORD, LAX, SFO, etc...

At LAX, we've been advised already that we will be the first UA station to recieve the 787 in service, presumably from IAH. I would also expect the aircraft to be routed EWR-IAH-LAX and possibly EWR-MCO just like the 777s when they arrived.

CO is using the same B/E model of seat for their 787s as they are for their newest 738s with the Sky Interior. The 777 is the exception in the fleet, the rest has basically the same seat. A few airlines have selected 8 abreast seating in the 787 on some of their fleets, but overall, 17 inch width is industry standard, so I'm not surprised to see CO/UA installing them.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
