EasyJet Launches New Route To Iceland

Wed Nov 09, 2011 9:27 am

I didn't see that one coming:

"easyJet, has today announced that it will operate a new route from London Luton Airport to Reykjavik in Iceland. The inaugural flight will take off from London Luton Airport on 27 March 2012 operating three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday!"

Didn't Go-Fly do STN-KEF at some point in the past?

Good to see more international carriers to Iceland - such a wonderful country

Besides the local carriers Icelandair and Iceland Express -
KEF will now see even more international scheduled carriers I guess.

so far...

Delta: New York
SAS: Oslo & Stockholm

This will be a useful addition - but I fear it will scheduled at some ungodly hour to make best use of KEF's 24-hour capability. Go operated it as a returning redeye back in the day, and a number of German loco-like airlines operate similar schedules in the summer months. So good news - but even better if operated at a reasonable hour (and better still if operated the whole year, not just the summer).

This is what I suspect too, and in many ways is a good way for the airline to utilise aircraft that would usually be parked up overnight from say 11pm to 6am.

In this time they could easily fly an aircraft LTN-KEF-LTN and be back in time for the morning rush...

I wonder if this could be what we could see more in future, the LCC utilising aircrafts more overnight without having to add additional aircraft. With LTN being a major LCC base for the likes of Monarch, Ryanair, easyJet and Thomson, the airport is absolutely choc-a-bloc with aircraft night stopping.

Having recently been to Iceland and back with Icelandair, I am surprised no one else has started
up seeing the fares...both our flights where full as well. Wonder if easyjet might push Iceland Express
out longer term.....certainly if they start out of LGW as well....

Couple this with the projected rival to Iceland Express and things could get interesting.

I didn't either. I'll be curious how the route performs.

I too thought LGW makes more sense. I suspect the nightime noise limits were the deciding factor:

What are the flight hours? I'm making assumptions here...

No ETOPS required to Iceland. It's about 2hrs 40min and never goes beyond 60 minutes from the nearest airport.

Now i can afford to visit after being put off by high prices.
I hope this helps their economy grow a bit.

Great news to hear! Hopefully easyJet will do a route to Iceland from LGW in the future. I guess they chose LTN because of Iceland Express at LGW, they do quite cheap fares so I guess U2 thought they would have some real competition from the very start here.

Why would night noise (which is virtually unrestricted at LGW anyway) prevent a KEF route and not 95 other routes EZY operate from LGW?

Anyone knows when will it be loaded onto U2's site?
Oh yeah, 10 NOV says the press release.

They say seats will be available tomorrow online (november, 10)

We are very glad to have EZY to Iceland

Actually the taxi from Reykjavik to KEF will be more expensive than the flight - that´s kind of funny

We can go to Hurghada or Sharm el Sheik in Egypt for the same price as the flight to London with Icelandair

06.40 departures from LTN - that's good - returning from KEF at 10.00 - even better. I think they'll do better than past attempts by British carriers on this route - better timings than Go in what is now a much bigger market, and without BA's need to fill premium seats.

Always wanted to go to iceland - and now I've got an easy option. Fantastic!

As this will take up a prime slot (time-wise) of a summer schedule flight, any ideas who's missing out?

Thats exactly what I am trying to work out too. The new Crete and Corfu services the airline announced a few weeks ago depart around 7am too!

I wonder if were getting an addition to the LTN base? Probably just wishful thinking and some jigging of the schedules.

Can't see who would go though?? DTM BFS ? can't see them dropping any others. Maybe dropping frequency on FAO or heaven forbid PMI ? - over summer?

to be honest, I thought the only interesting times in Iceland are over Winter!
