Plane Down Near PHX

Thu Nov 24, 2011 2:19 am

Local media reporting a plane has crashed into the Superstition Mountains near Flat Iron around 6:30pm. No word on the type of plane or casualties at the moment.

Superstition Mountains, not Superstitious.

This is really bizarre, I was just driving by them a couple hours ago. Might hop back on the road and have a look.

The rumors about this are flying everywhere, but nothing concrete. For a while, everyone was certain it was an Allegiant MD-80, but someone just posted on Twitter that it is NOT an Allegiant aircraft.. suspected to be private. Lots of fires.

Any news sources yet? I'm coming up empty.

Photo of the fire kind of hard to tell exactly how big the plane was. Looks to be split though.

Quite honestly, nobody knows anything. The local ABC station has had the same moron babbling on the phone for what feels like a half hour. Nobody knows anything, but he says the fire isn't big enough to be a "jet."

I have a feeling the that fire department may want to keep it under wraps for an hour or so.

A person camping near the incident said that when he heard the plane go overhead "it just didn't sound right. Y'know, the engine sounded different than usual."

According to witnesses, it appears to have been a smaller plane and the FAA doesn't have any immediate reports of missing commerical aircraft. Let's hope so.

Sky Harbour and Mesa airport officials say all planes accounted for; it's not from IWA or PHX.

Judging from the photo, it could be anything.. but most likely not a jetliner with thousands of pounds of fuel. Then again, anything is possible.

Prayers for those involved. Hoping for a positive outcome despite the odds.

The weather is clear here, no reports of wind shear, clear skies, etc. Probably a private aircraft, as it was most likely flying VFR.

The area of the fire in the live stream actually looks quite big. But you'd think we'd have heard something by now if it was commercial.

From the live video, it looks to be of a medium-sized impact (Cessa 404, etc.).

Going through the aircraft listed in FlightAware, I don't see anything that is out of the ordinary out of PHX, GYR, or DVT.

From that youtube video, it seems like the plane/ light source flew straight into the terrain, almost level. I could be wrong, maybe the light disappeared behind the mountain.

That's a big fireball and impact for a 'small' plane....Whatever it was it had a fair amount of fuel on-board. sad to watch the video posted and see the planes lights.. then the explosion

Yeah, obviously not nearly enough evidence to draw a firm conclusion about anything, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was CFIT. It's dark, sounds like a private pilot, flying in an area of uneven terrain, video looks like he's flying in a straight line towards mountains...

Maybe I'm wrong, but that second explosion looked too big to be from a small non-commercial aircraft.

I would imagine ATC would know if they lost any plane flying IFR which of course would include any airliner. Fire does look pretty big so maybe a larger GA plane.

An aircraft mechanic that was apparently in the flight path heard it and said it was obviously having engine trouble. Probably was concentrating on the engine problems and didn't see the mountains ahead of him.

Well, whatever aircraft type it was, it must have been a larger aircraft. This could be a long night for some people.

Any military bases in that area ?

The fire looks quite large to be some GA aircarft.

Just my opinion, seems odd that no one is missing a plane. Again,I'm going by the fires. Looks pretty large.

Who knows. This might belong to the mililatray and they just as soon that everybody not make a 'big deal' about it.

The plane departed Mesa/Falcon Field airport. This comes from co-workers who spoke with the FAA. BTW don't flame or bash, these co-workers are Maintence Controllers at a 121 carirrer.

Registration says this just came from Indiana, transferred 10-21-2011. N690SM is being reported as the registration.

That's quite a coincidence, I was looking into the procedure for starting up a Part 135 operation and was dismayed at the complexity such an endeavor entails. Then searching for Part 135 businesses for sale and I came across AirWest, the operator of the alleged airplane, as available. My condolences to those involved.

I hike that area a lot and from watching the Youtube video and seeing the news feed, this is going to be a recovery effort only.

I thought about something last night as I was getting ready for bed. The Aero Commander and Turbo Commander look similar. Could it be that the a/c was fueled improperly? If the a/c had just been fueled, did someone put avgas instead of jet fuel in the tanks? When was the a/c serviced? I bring this up because, many FBO's are employed by young people just starting out in aviation, with limited training, could likely make this mistake. Thanks to anyone else who may shed some light on this.

May God bless this family.
