I must say, it was nice to see an airline flying the MSY-BTR route again, if only for today. Delta Flight 9671, a 757, flew the route this afternoon. I'm sure it is a charter or some sort. My, I miss the good old days. Now, the only city in Louisiana you can fly to from MSY nonstop is Shreveport.

1) if I had a make a guess, the DL 757 probably made up the LSU Tiger's football charter to Gainesville, FL, since they would have flown out today. DL was simply ferrying the airplane to BTR.
2) there is a grass roots effort among the 'major' cities/airports in Louisiana (Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Monroe, Shreveport, and New Orleans to a lesser extent) to explore the possibilities of intrastate Louisiana air service. From my 13 1/2 years at MSY, and seeing how Royale Airlines and L'Express made out, I'm not sure it'd work.

Two years ago, at a band competition in New Orleans (in which our freshman concert band placed first, jazz band also placed first, and our symphonic band received the highest overall rating, even though they were competing against college bands. I was a freshman then), we stayed at a Radisson(?) near the airport. The 737-300s were very quiet, the few 737-200s were kinda noisy, but one Delta 727 that flew out shook the whole building. It was low and loud!

Marc, as I soon as I return to MSY in November, I will conatct you about the ramp tour. My summer was so busy, I barely had time to check my email. I can't wait to do it though.....I'll bring lots of film.

The 717's low operating costs and high efficiency would make it a good candidate for a well funded Louisian intrastate airline.

Don't forget DL's flag stop MLU flights that continue to other cities in Louisianna. ATL-MLU-SHV-DFW.

We haven't forgotten DL's northern Louisiana milk run (...MLU-SHV... and reverse), but the latest airline idea would be an intrastate commuter airline, and would offer such routings as LCH-SHV, AEX-MSY, BTR-MLU, etc. The basic problem as to why this type of operation hasn't been successful in the past (see Royale and L'Express) is a lack of passenger demand for those types of routes.
Something to consider.....USAirways Express has been a busy tenant at MSY over the past few years. They have (in the past) offered MSY-BTR, MLU, SHV, Beaumont TX, etc service, and it hasn't been profitable for them. If anyone could have made a go of it, it would have been US Express. They had the infrastructure already in place, a good 10+ connection flights to mainline USAirways, etc.
For those reasons I just mentioned, an intrastate LA carrier will not make money.....unless, and it's a big unless.....they get a substantial subsidy from the airports/cities. And I can tell you that that won't happen.
