Who Else Besides KLM Operates MD-11 Pax Planes

Tue Nov 29, 2011 1:45 pm

Is KLM the only commercial operator left who uses the MD-11 for pax service. Please do not include cargo and charter ops. Also, does anyone know where KLM uses their MD-11's?

I thought that World Airways has some MD-11 pax' around. But I thought that they were used for charters for the army only.

That's why KL is the only commercial operator of the MD11 nowadays

If you want the full list use something like libhomeradar.

http://www.libhomeradar.org/databasequery/index.php

If you type in PH-KCA, then PH-KCB etc etc you will see where these aircraft fly every day.

That is a very handy website skipness1E!!! How reliable is that website? I see KL also uses the MD11 to HAV, PBM and DEL.

Since I wanted to avoid work, I pulled recent flights for the 10 KL MD-11's.

Tossed them in a spreadsheet and avoided more work.

Anyway the KL MD-11 appears to be regular equipment on:

AMS-PTY
AMS-JRO-DAR
AMS-YUL
AMS-PBM
AMS-DXB
AMS-SFO
AMS-MIA
AMS-AUA
AMS-CUR-BON

Their was an recent thread but it only confirmed the Caribbean destinations.

Very handy for aircraft and flight number, however unless you are familiar with the routing, often worth googling the flight number to check it does indeed go from AMS to XYZ. I use it daily.

Cheers !

You can add HAV, PUJ, PTY, JRO, DAR, PBM to the list and delete SXM as is currently 744 full pax, YYC and YVR are A330, IKA is 772 today, don't know if IKA is regular on 772 in winter season.

I flew DEL-AMS on a MD11 on October 1st; KL has been operating MD11s to DEL throughout the summer season. I am not sure about the winter season. Also LOS and ACC have regularly seen MD11s in the past but apparently not any longer?

Any info about how much longer KLM is planning to operate the MD11? I'm still missing the type in my log, unfortunately it is a long haul plane so it is much harder and more expensive to come up with a trip that includes the MD11 than it would have been for short haul equipment. Plus KLM is kind of on the expensive side.

I just photographed PH-KCC landing at TNCA/AUA on 27 Nov 11 as KLM 767 AMS-AUA. Great to see this big blue bird at Aruba. It was continuing on to TNCB/BON then back to EHAM/AMS.

This summer at TNCM/SXM, we saw the KLM MD-11 there on a few occasions during a great two week vacation on the island. My family was understanding enough to hang out on Maho Beach and have lunch at Sunset Bar & Grill while I captured some shots on the landing and departing aircraft.

Seeing the KLM MD-11s flying into places like SXM and AUA, especially with some great sunset lighting and reflections of the Caribbean blue water on their bellies is magical! Try to capture them while you can.

KLM used the MD-11 to YYC? I don't know about that. I know for a fact that it uses it in the summer to YVR (winter they use an A330)

This ACFT is supposed to have a range of around 7,500 miles.

Why would they be flying it on 4,000 or 5,000 mile flights where they could fly another ACFT with less range & capabilities..?

Seems like a waste of the ACFT's capabilities.....

The MD-11 never met its range projections. It's much more effective on routes under 5,000 miles. It's also much more economic with today's high fuel prices for KLM to use the 777 on longer routes.

For the past few years, KLM has mainly used the MD-11 on routes with strong leisure demand since they have a smaller business class cabin than other types.

It was an MD-11 to YYC this past summer if memory correct, like YVR. Currently, YUL is MD-11, YYZ is 744, and YYC and YVR are both A332.

I remember flying on a DL MD-11 from NRT to ATL, and that is approx. 6,800 miles, so it definitely has long range capabilities.

But I understand the inefficiency. Seems they would want to make a bigger business class and fill that up with preimum PAX, rather than many low pay economy class PAX....

Too bad they did away with the 2 x 4 x 3 seating. Only rode on one once, but liked it. 3 x 3 x 3 must have some advantage.

Yes, but CASM is not based on fuel price alone. Lease rates also play a significant role.

Amazing aircraft and one that is actually very much preferred by many frequent travellers. It feels roomier than other long haul aircraft due to high ceilings.

KLM MD-11 vs LH A346 at YVR....I know which one I prefer! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMSOw1yD6ck

And here's the inside....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wKn4DRe9iw

I personally hope they stay in the fleet for a long time to come!

The the electric/electronic supply boxes for the in-flight entertainment system, I learnt on this forum months ago. Each box can supply three seats. Aside from that, I don't see any advantage of the 3 + 3 + 3 seating.

Some people like a symmetrical seating. Another fact is that with 3 + 3 + 3 seating, six people can sit in one row and not have to put up with a seat neighbour, while with 2 + 4 + 3, it's only 5.

KL only uses the MD-11's to the Carribean and South America. During my last tour at KL I asked why and heard they use them in that area due to the shorter runways. A 747/777 needs more tarmac then the MD-11 and the 3rd engine makes for a faster take-off.

Not really.

The max range number is specified with maximum allowed fuel onboard, which reduces the cargo you can carry.

Given the big belly of the MD-11 and KLM's route structure, I'm sure that cargo capacity is not being wasted.

And when you do this, you can no longer fly the max range missions.

It feels roomier than other long haul aircraft due to high ceilings.

And the large windows!

The big windows are/were one of the best features of the MD-11 and DC-10. Apart from the better view they also made the cabin seem brighter, especially compared to the L-1011 which had notably small windows in comparison. I also found L-1011 windows mounted slightly too high for a good view.

Quoting VC10er (Reply 41):
I read KLM is putting in a much needed new business seat, lie flat (don't know if it will be true lie flats or angled) or perhaps they already have? But will they/have they put them on the MD-11?

AFAIK this will be KL's new C-class seat: http://www.beaerospace.com/products/seating_business_class.htm

Don't think the MD11 fleet will get them though..
