Boeing 787 In New JAL Livery

Wed Dec 14, 2011 7:14 pm

looks like that boeing re-painted JAL's first 787 in their new crane (aka boring imo) livery.

high resolution image of the plain plane here:

http://www.airlinereporter.com/2011/...eing-787-dreamliner-in-new-livery/

i was not sure if they were going to re-paint the 787s that have already been painted in their old livery. kind of sad that they decided to do so.

according to flight blogger, JAL's 787 will be the first with GE engines:

I sure hope they didn't pay anyone money to design this livery. This must be a joke. I thought the ANA livery was poor but this beats everything. If you have a nightflight you'll be asleep before you even enter the plane.

Well, but it sure is nice to see another 787 with engines attached!! The tail is fine, but a stripe of some sort would've been a nice touch.

I can only assume that due to their financial problem this is the cheapest paint scheme they could do.

How much does it cost to paint a more "colorful" scheme anyway (or what is the range in cost of paint jobs)? I know it also adds some weight but I would assume it would be almost inconsequential.

The JAL logo on the tail is classy and a nice throwback but the rest of the C/S if you call it that is flat at best. I say add a thin red shat line beneath the windows.

I really dislike the new JAL paint scheme on most birds, but do however like it on the 787. I'm not saying it's beautiful, or the best scheme of all times, but I prefer it over the old one (on a 787 that is) and think it looks fresh and clean.

The real shame is that they didn't go back to the original design the current one is based on.

I prefer JAL's previous livery with the partial Japanese flag on the tail

I'm no fan of the new (old) JAL colour scheme and said so when it was announced but there are now quite a few planes carrying it and the effect of five or six together (at HND) is better than a single example. Shame we won't see it on an MD-80.

The "new scheme" looks very hastily done and mundane. They say that differentiation is one of the most important things in business, there is nothing differentiating about that scheme. Boooooooo!

I think the worst part of the new livery (even worse than the Eurowhite) is the choice of font. Italics and all caps make this look like something that was designed in Microsoft Word by a ten-year-old.

RIP the beautiful "old" JAL livery with the sun on the tail.

I have been told by the airline and by others in Japan that the design is supposed to resonate with the older population in Japan and connects to the "good 'ol days." I guess if it works for locals.

I think the best comment that I have seen, is this livery makes it easy if JAL wants/needs to lease their aircraft to someone else.

Wouldn't it cost MORE money to repaint an entire fleet than keep an existing livery? This has got to be one of the worst liveries around.

I actually love their new livery.

I think the designers have done something that is very difficult to do. They've created a classic almost retro livery that looks modern. The Crane is fantastic - as it has always been, and the font, combined with the Crane reminds me of the 50s or 60s, yet at the same time it looks fresh and new. They've also stuck with the colours and simplicity of the Japanese flag - red and white.

Simple yet beautiful!

The thing is I was under the impression sticking all that white paint on the plane isnt all that much cheaper then adding other colours. The white paint apparently cost less but overall a scheme with some colour cant cost that much otherwise everyone would paint the plane just white with black titling. I cant fathom how having a faint red belly with a grey/black line or a red cheatline down the plane would add huge cost.

Lets face it if Paint was a huge expense would Ryanair have their kind of design and would Southwest be painting their planes totaly blue? Since they are the ones who know how to squeeze money to make a profit I'd be enclined to say nope.

Could it be more bland?

I have a theory about this; despite the BS about the design in the press release, I think it is intended to be a "sackcloth and ashes" livery, to drum into JAL employees (as if they hadn't noticed) that their airline is in a bad way financially. They will have this livery for a while, until certain strategic objectives are achieved - profitability, load factors etc etc; it's a kind of reverse psychology, to encourage employees to contribute to the recovery and once achieved, they'll return to a decent livery.

This livery is just sad: totally without imagination - like one of those cheap supermarket products that cut down on packaging and design by simply having white packing with black titles - we used to call them "yellow packs" in Ireland. You have to wonder what JAL actually thinks people will think when they see this livery: I know what I think - "airline on the skids".

Innovation perhaps, but design, what design? They have beautiful gardens, true, but look how long it took them to design cars that aren't downright ugly. First they were ugly, then they copied European cars, and much later they found a somewhat original design language.

This couldn't have been that cheap to re-do right? I mean their last livery was an off-white, almost cream color and this one is WHITE-white.

I was going to say they have become the first airline to paint their 787 in two liveries, but I guess ANA already has done that huh?
