Bye Bye To XM On AirTran.....

Mon Dec 19, 2011 9:21 pm

AirTran's XM satellite radio service to be removed

Quote:
AirTran Airways flights will soon lose a feature enjoyed by many passengers: XM satellite radio.

The move comes as Dallas-based Southwest Airlines folds AirTran's operations into its own after acquiring AirTran earlier this year. As part of the acquisition, Southwest will begin flying to Atlanta next year and after the operations are integrated, the combined carrier will be called Southwest.

I only flew on FL once after they installed XM and I rather enjoyed it as the time it gave me a chance to listen to the satellite radio competition at the time (I've been a Sirius subscriber for several years now.) and it was definitely nicer than the canned audio on other airlines (Even the music library on the Delta On Demand system.). In some respects, it's not a huge loss since there are services like Pandora that one can access via the onboard WiFi as well as if you are a SiriusXM subscriber and have the online subscription you can listen to it that way.

It's too bad that the concept hasn't gone over as well as it should have. AirTran and JetBlue (As well as ExpressJet) have been the only carriers to offer this service (other airlines have had prerecorded XM content on their a/c) and it really should have been a more successful product.

I could see this one coming a mile away.

On a related note, has it been decided if WN will ditch FL's GoGo Wi-Fi service in favor of WN's Row44 solution?

I think they will continue to offer GoGo until the planes get assimilated into WN....

Yes, Southwest will be getting rid of GoGo and going for Row 44 on ALL fleets.

While it is a shame for FL Customers who are used to it, it probably is for the best in terms of Weight and Fuel Cost.

I flew FL 3 times and didn't use it. Just popped up my own Ipod and jammed to my own music.

It was very pointless in my opinion.

Honestly, the only time I found it somewhat useful was during the baseball season when I could tune in to my Cleveland Indians at 30,000 feet. Otherwise, as with you, I found it rather pointless.

I like the XM but like everything else FL I've been fully expecting it to disappear soon enough anyway. Ironically its one of the few IFE options I've every really used. From my point of view its no big deal. The whole IFE thing is blown way out of proportion. I don't choose carriers based on IFE, actually I enjoy flights that have none more anyway. The best thing about the XM was that it was free and it didn't bother anyone around the user. I would not have paid for it.

...which is almost certainly why it's not being kept around, as well as why it hasn't seen broader adoption. Most people who can afford to purchase airline tickets can also afford to carry the music they like with them.

I had no success streaming Sirius on DL about a year ago......I have not tried since they changed their streaming portal.

I've flown on trip with FL, and I did use the XM radio a bit. In general I enjoy listening to the radio, but having XM on the airplane just didn't excite me that much. Not a big loss if you ask me. I'd much rather pay for Wi-Fi.

I'm probably an exception, but I've been a Sirius subscriber for the last 8 years and used the XM feature on FL every time I flew with them. I like listening to Sirius because it exposes me to music before most of the population. It also means I don't really have an MP3 collection. I flew on UA/US over the weekend, and on both US flights, the audio system was not working. I was very disappointed.

I'm not surprised by this, nor will it matter to me since FL is pulling out of MLI next month, and I try to fly exclusively from my home airport. It is kind of sad seeing FL being dismantled in almost every way.

Aww I loved their XM radio! Does this mean that WN will equip it, or will they just stick with their $5 WiFi?
Greetings from Dulles!

Last thing to disappear will be FL's checked bag fees. WN seems to like them at their new toy.... You'd thinkthey would'vebeen the first to go since WN is so opposed to them.... Just sayin'....

Haha, no way. That's practically free money. They'll ride that ship as long as possible. What I would like to see is another airline poke fun at WN and its bags fly free and no change fees slogans since they own FL now.

Wonder if XM will start calling AirTran's cell phone 2 or 3 times a day, often at dinner time, trying to get them to come back with some crappy promotion? FL had better cancel their credit card before XM can keep charging it despite cancellation of the service...

I know the feeling. I gave up on XM after the "New Owners" turned it into regular radio.

FL/WN made a good decision.

Are you just looking for any excuse to give WN? How much is the weight saving?

They have been better off doing that by kicking off over-weight customers.

Sometimes I wonder!!!

Yes, Southwest will be getting rid of GoGo and going for Row 44 on ALL fleets.

Not completely true.

Southwest has announced that they intend to have Wi-Fi on all fleets. They never said they would have Row44 on all fleets. There are all kinds of negotiations still underway.

This must have changed since the last time I checked with Southwest, before it was mentioned WN would outfit it all with Row 44, but this article mentions issues with Row 44

Southwest, which this year finalized its acquisition of AirTran Airways, has not yet decided whether to equip AirTran’s Boeing 717s and 737s with the satellite system or to continue offering Gogo’s air-to-ground (ATG)-based service, a competing product to Row 44. AirTran’s entire fleet is equipped with Gogo.

As a music fan, I enjoyed the XM offerings on FL. It was great to plug in and listen to the XM 80s Channel with there deep playlist of songs. The actual units didn't seem to take up any more space and it would be an attractive option for long haul flights, (of which WN is doing more of). Not sure what the cost to keep it in place would be like, but sad to see it go.

See ya.

Always thought it was sort of an odd product to offer.

Just as long as UA doesn't get rid of Channel 9, audio is almost a pointless amenity vs costs.

Doesn't surprise me..No one was more disappointed on this acquisition by SWA then me..I liked the AirTran product. In fact I flew them so much I always had a free business class upgrade. As far as working for SW they are the tops but I do not like their cattle car seating and boarding process as a passenger. AirTran had a nice niche they were reasonable in price even at the last minute and upgrades were cheap by comparison. I just flew them last week to use the last of my upgrades. Was talking to the flight crew I said looks like your vote was done with a gun to your head the capt said absolutely but he said he would be able to keep his captain seat barely. In the long run for the employees will probably be a good deal but I am sorry to see them go.
