Looking around at flights that are still available on Feb 6th I'm finding that some carriers and destinations are sold out.

You aren't getting a ticket to ORD or MDW. UA/CO sold out days ago and haven't added a single flight or upgraded equipment to ORD. AA appears to finally sold out their last flight to ORD. WN is sold out to MDW. WN has sold out to BWI and BOS as well. They have some seats still available to ISP and PVD. FL has sold out of most everything out of IND. They have a few biz class seats left to ATL and a few seats left to BOS but those are going fast. It looks like if you want a ticket you are going to have to pay a premium with UA/CO to EWR and BOS, US to PHL, CLT and BOS or DL which for now has plenty of seats available but they are charging a hefty price for tickets. Remotely affordable tickets appear to be gone.

That is unusual as the Patriots generally fly out of PVD on their DL charters. The logistics for DL would be as follows: a 767-300 would sub on an ATL-BOS flight, then they would fly the plane for 15 minutes from BOS to PVD.

For Superbowl they always seem to use BOS.

I don't think TSA will be the bottleneck in IND. I think the problem will be the check-in process. DL will have an incredible volume of passengers coming through and their ticket counter positioning is rather poor I think. It is going to be a complete mess unless DL opens up the other row of ticket counters on the wall kind of around the wall from where their current bank of counters is located. Anyone that has been through IND knows what I mean. If DL tries to serve all those passengers using only the counters they have now it will be a service nightmare.

Additional note: While the IND ticket counters are poorly conceived and civic plaza is a bit of a bottleneck, the security checkpoint is probably the best in the nation. It is wide open and they can move a lot of people through quickly. While nobody enjoys the screening process it is at least much more comfortable at IND. From security through to the concourses is a greatly improved experience.

I suspect that there will not be much in the way of checked luggage, and most folks will be able to do online check-in and avoid the counters. Unless there are weather issues either at IND or the various major hubs.

There may be more checked luggage than you realize. These aren't people on a one day business trip. These are people who have been here for a few days or more and have brought clothing appropriate for the cold weather and for parties. It is possible you may see more checked luggage than normal. Weather-wise I'd say a nor'easter would be about the worst possible scenario for Monday the 6th.

I thought IND had set up common-use ticket counters in the new terminal. this shouldn't be a problem unless there are no computers at those empty counters.

Don't forget that if the Concourse B security checkpoint is backed up, one can still use the A checkpoint (and vice versa). Both concourses are linked by a post-security walkway, so screening shouldn't be a problem.

I think most gates are leased but there are a number that are common use. If you walk around the A concourse you can spot the common use gates. They don't have any kind of equipment at the counter. The DL gates all have power ports in the seating area, the boarding pass scanners, and the computer terminals at the gate desks.

Based on what is currently listed in OAG here is what I'm finding for IND. This will be what goes of the A concourse. I'm listing mainline only.

As I stated, the Patriots generally charter out of PVD on DL 767-300s. This time, they used BOS. There is another time they used BOS, and that is a few years ago when they flew to London for an NFL game. That flight was on VS. This coming October, they fly to London again to play the rams. I suspect that will be on DL now that DL flies the route daily.

Forget the school buses, folks. The real traffic increases will be the private jets coming in from all four corners of the country. With last years superbowl the traffic was spread out as it was in the Arlington/Dallas metro area which has a few 5,000' + airports in the vicinity. IND seems like the airport that will take most, if not all, the private jet traffic.

I think every time for Super Bowl they have used BOS and using BOS for London could be for media access or runway requirements. Virgin Atlantic has a deal with the NFL and have been flying all the teams for the last few years so would think they will be flying the Patriots and the Rams.

There isn't much they can do about actual counter space but there will be extra agents on hand. Most flew in yesterday and will be on hand through the 7th. Mostly TDY agents (above and below wing) from other stations.

Well, I happened to have to go to the IND airport yesterday, and I know I saw one parked at a jetbridge at the far end of IND's A concourse.

Right on the left is a link to the FIDS. Everything's listed, broken down by airline. Looks pretty accurate to me. Filtering Delta, it shows all their flights for the day excluding private charters.

If you filter Delta there is a problem with the results. There are two DTW flights listed for 5:25am There seems to be some kind of disconnect between Delta, the IND site, FlightAware and FlightStatus. That flight is either 8779 or 8819. It may be a 757 or 767. Maybe both? FlightAware shows one and FlightStatus shows the other. IND shows both. Delta shows one.

The 0525 departure is 8779 and it's a 75X. My best guess is they changed the flight number from 8819 close-in for some reason and it's still showing. I can't find any flights assigned to 8819 in our system for the 6th.

A couple others that may throw you off. 5872 (IND-BOS-IND), 4317 (IND-RDU-IND), 4232 (IND-DCA-CHS) 5873 (IND-BOS-IND, and 5887 (IND-LGA-PWM).

It's just they way their airport FIIDS displays the flights but it's pretty much accurate.

Also, there are several 333s and 767s departing on the 6th but you won't find them on flight aware unless you know the actual flight number. I'm not really inclined to post that but yes there will be quite a few widebody departures outside of the extra sections and upgrades.

Can you post roughly when the A330's would depart? I don't really care about flight numbers or anything like that. I know of the 5 widebody flights that are loaded in DL.com. What hour ranges could I expect to see ones that aren't listed? LIke 0600-0700, 1000-1100, 1300-1400, etc. Trying to find the best time to go. Don't bother looking before 6am because that is just too early  

Just playing on Flytecomm.com I noticed a number of aircraft from Sun Country, JetBlue, Miami Air, Swift Air (2 734s) and North American at IND. I also noticed AC sent two A320's and that one of DL's 753's is being flown in from Fort Bragg Air Field in El Paso (I am guessing it just came from a military charter).

Yes, it turned 8789 which departed IND at 0115. It will be immediately ferried back to IND when it completes 8789 to turn 8787.

I see AA (more specifically American Eagle) has cancelled an ORD and LGA flight today.

BTW does anyone know which direction the jets are taking off at IND this morning?

I didn't stay too long. I was freezing my butt off. I had a warm enough jacket with me but my gloves just weren't doing the job. I did get a couple good pics I think. I haven't looked at them yet. Got some video as well. Things were running very slow at IND this morning. I noted flight times and when they should have been leaving and it seems everything was running late. The first 767 I saw leave left at least 25 minutes late. The frost was so heavy this morning that they were having to deice planes.

IND handled rental car returns very efficiently. It looked as if they were using the cell phone lot for returns which helped ease traffic up at the terminal. The one area I thought would be the biggest nightmare - civic plaza - was actually no problem. It may be that people were anxious to get through security. In my opinion security was an unexpected problem. The A concourse checkpoint was badly backed up. There was likely a very long wait to clear security. The one thing that turned out as expected was that the ticket counters (Delta) were a problem. Part of the problem with the Delta counters was being up against the wall on the one side. There just isn't enough room. The other is that they didn't have enough people working ticket counters. They opened space on the ticket counter aisle on the side opposite them. Unfortunately they didn't open nearly enough space. They moved the Sky Priority Lane to the other side and there just wasn't enough help to deal with the traffic. The Sky Priority line must have been approaching 50+ feet long. I took a picture of it and I'll try uploading it later. Maybe someone from DL can explain why the company didn't pick up more ticket counter space for the day. This problem was very predictable.

There was a steady stream of private jets in and out all morning long. When I went inside the terminal I look out at the field and saw the Atlas jet sitting at the end of the B concourse. I saw a rather large US jet arrive approximately 7am. Was that an A321 or did they send in something bigger? I did get a video of 5 big Delta jets in one area. It was made up of two 767's, a 753 and two 757's. While a 767 doesn't stand out in a big way against a 757 those planes stand out against an A319/A320 (I couldn't make out which it was).

Overall the airport handled the morning rush fairly well. If the city gets another Super Bowl they can learn from the experience today and make a few tweaks.
