63% Support Name Change For YNG

Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:30 pm

625 individuals particapated in a poll to decide whether the name of the airport at YNG should be changed. This poll was conducted through the local support group called YNGAirPartners. The group unoffically bridges the gap between local fliers and new directions the airport may or potentially be seeking. I think it is a good idea in that it keeps a connection from the community and the local airport.

As was noted in an earlier thread nobody is stating that a name change will assist the airport in acquiring additional flight service however this poll was put out just the same.

Currently the airport is called Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. The new suggested name from the poll is Northeast Ohio Regional Airport.

I think "YNG" should be changed, because I always think it must be in Canada.

Im all for the Traficant Idea.....

But seriously, what is this change in name supposed to do? I have not been catching up with WKBN27 lately so I am not sure if this name change is to go along with some type of deal between YNG and the drilling companies? Maybe for renovation/some type of expansion?

If this is really intended go along with the whole gas and oil deal, I would imagine G4 needs to expand their market outside of vacation destinations in order to make this work a little better.

Also, I heard that all drilling has been halted because of the recent frequency of earthquakes happening in the area. There any substance to that?

While I have known for quite some time "YNG" is actually located in Youngstown, Ohio it may cause confusion for some. Changing this might be difficult as authorities (IATA/ICAO/FAA) seem reluctant to make changes like these.

Good point! When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was about some Canadian airport.

The story linked below provides a good update regarding the proposed airport name change issue as well as additional flights by Allegiant.

Regional Airport Sees Travel Growth

"The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport posted a second straight year of strong passenger traffic in 2011, but travelers will have a wait a bit longer to find out if the airport will get a name change."

"Dickten said the airport also may be able to get an Allegiant flight to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., starting in May, although that route hasn't been "discussed thoroughly."

"The board tabled a motion to pursue changing the name until commissioners of Trumbull and Mahoning counties, along with the Warren and Youngstown mayors and others, can be consulted."

From the YNG Facebook Page:
We are extremely excited to announce that 70,243 total passengers flew in and out of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in 2011, a 34% increase over 2010! This was the best year at YNG since 1999 when 80,529 total passengers chose YNG. We would like to thank you for your support as we strive to make flying easy for travelers across Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania!
