Copa Airlines Announces New Destinations!

Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:40 pm

Copa will begin to fly to Las Vegas, Curaçao and Liberia!

http://www.copaair.com/Sites/CC/EN/I...-de-viaje/Pages/Mapa-de-Rutas.aspx
In their destinations page, they say that they will begin flying these new routes in June!
I read somewhere that they will also begin PTYREC, but It isn't an official source.

LIR, REC, and CUR are solid additions to the network but I'm not so sure about LAS. Latin America (except Mexico) - Las Vegas is a relatively low yielding, low volume market so im not quite sure how CM is going to make it work with (most likely weight-resticted) 737's.

Las Vegas is increasingly popular with Brazilians and GRULAS is creeping up into being one of the ten busiest U.S.-GRU city pairs.

Yes! Copa applied for the route before the Brazilian ANAC: http://www2.anac.gov.br/arquivos/xls...0por%20etapa%20(com%20parecer).xls

Great news! Thanks for sharing the information !
CM PTY-AUA was upgraded to 7x weekly in December, CM PTY-SXM is thrice a week nowadays and DAE [CUR-PTY] 2x weekly is not flying anymore. With that being said, CM PTY-CUR was a logical and predicted move.

Liberia, Costa Rica*

Liberia last week inaugurated a new terminal building and several airlines are also taking advantage of this fact.
Authorities from the civil aviation of Costa Rica stated that they want to boost new sources of the leisure component there, especially from Europe.
Due to the new CM PTY-LIR, Copa Airlines is opening an untapped market as this new service would allow travelers from the Caribbean and South America to Liberia through PTY. I expect a response on TACA due to the new CM PTY-LIR.

Copa Airlines indirectly flies to IAH as the Panamanian airline bears its designator code on CO PTY-IAH.
CM would hardly fly to IAH using their own planes due to this fact.
For example, regarding the market of New York City, Copa Airlines flies PTY-JFK 14x weekly in order not to interfere with CO PTY-EWR 9x weekly.

738/73Gs don't have the legs for SFO without weight restrictions. Yes, yes, I know PTY-EZE/MVD are longer distance-wise, but the winds are worse PTY->SFO and would require a pretty significant weight restriction, particularly in the winter when even IAH-PTY can take nearly 4 hours. Route needs a UA 752 or will have to wait for a 737MAX assuming it gets a range increase. Route could do well if it could somehow connect UA's Pacific network and PTY banks...

CM would be definetely stretching the range of any 73G flying the hypothetical PTY-SFO:

I don't know if there is any longer route worldwide than PTY-MVD with 73G:

PTY-EZE 3313 nm
PTY-SFO 3320 nm
PTY-MVD 3385 nm

Liberia is also a place that currently has no easy connectivity from South America.
There are many destinations in the Caribbean and Central America that might work successfully based on the possible services of Copa Airlines.
I think that most of the success of CM PTY-HAV 35 weekly, CM PTY-SDQ 35x weekly and CM PTY-PUJ 24x weekly is due to healthy connections through PTY and coming mainly from deep South America.

The credit for Copa Airlines consists to transport passengers from several destinations from South America in narrow planes and once at PTY they can be diversified in others stations placed whether in the Caribbean, Central or North America and using narrow planes again.
This model has some advantages as compared with any wide-body equipment linking deep South America and other regions located in the northern hemisphere as non-stop flights.
How many weekly flights do LAN and TAM supply to the Caribbean and using wide-body planes?

Regards.

It had been said before that if CM PTY hub could sustain thrice daily MCO, even thrice weekly LAS may be possible.
Lots of passengers will find the option of flying non-stop from PTY to LAS very attractive compared to going thru U.S. immigration/customs and changing planes @ MIA, ATL, ORD, IAH, DFW, LAX...
I believe a B737-700 won't face any weigh-restrictions on that route.

Quoting SJOtoLIR (Reply 7):

Quoting zippyjet (Reply 16):
I see Washington DC. Is that DCA and or IAD for CM? Was there ever any consideration of CM serving BWI?

I'm sure CM would have saved $$ flying to BWI instead of IAD. And given the transfer time between D.C. and both IAD and BWI and the times CM operates, the difference for the passengers would have been more psychological than real.
In the hypothetical case UA would decide to fly IAD-PTY w/ its own metal, pretty sure CM may be forced to move its WAS flight to BWI.
PTY-BWI with E190 may be even possible.

The return flight times are a bit awkward. A LAS departure 8h15m earlier would make more sense.

Probably CM is affraid if the crew stays too long in LAS, they would have problems making it consciously sane to the return flight.

I flew on Copa from LIM to PTY and enjoyed the flight. This flight was far better than CO's IAH-PTY or IAH-LIM flight. I think there is room for Copa to fly to IAH (they are already flying to ORD, why not IAH). PTY is ideally located as an excellent hub.

And yes, next city logically will be Belize. They could also consider DFW.

CM 253............LAS 05:37...........PTY 14:36..........Tu, Th, Sa, Su..............73G
Effective: June 27th

The return flight times are a bit awkward

That schedule is designed to allow connections once at PTY.

No doubt that AQP would be also a star seller!

Apequipa might face altitude issues for any plane fully packed linking AQP-PTY as non-stop.

well - AQP is 8405 ft elevated - and AQP - PTY is 1826 mi around 1500 mi less than EZE - PTY so I think this should be double...

Indeed, LC Perú intends to operate IQT-LET with the DHC-8-202 after LAN Perú implements the code-share agreement with LC Perú, (LP recently increased frequency on the LIM-IQT route to 5x daily).

supose that the incoming LET flight will be connected timly well with the LET-BOG flights provided by LAN Colombia?

That could be a possibility in the future, however LAN Colombia doesn't require extra feed for the BOG-LET route since the service is usually full. LAN Colombia faces limited competition on the route because the only other competitor on the route is Copa Airlines Colombia; which operates the BOG-LET route daily with the E90.

I'm sure DEN would pay a pretty penny to see CM start PTY. UA connections ex-DEN are more than sufficient, as are connections ex-PTY for what O&D Denver has to South and Central America. Wonder if we'll ever see it happen, or if they're happy enough with UA through IAH.

DEN would work really well...but can even the 73G make it from DEN with a full load given DENs high altitude. Now a 752 can!
When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.

I think their are still some interesting pending destinstions in the US like:

DEN, MSY, DFW, AUS, IAH, BOS, ATL, SFO to mentioned the most interesting one in my opinion.

No reason it can't. The 73G has excellent takeoff performance, and DEN has 12-16,000' runways.

CM has the longest 73G route, which is PTY-MVD and about 3400 miles.

PTY-DEN is about 2650 miles.

Also, PTY-DEN is mostly north/south, with a bit of east/west. Even with the hot/high of DEN, since the flight will be going slightly eastward from DEN, I would think that the tailwinds would help it here, and the 73G would be able to do this route without any restrictions.

SA)">CO does UIO-IAH without issue...I think they may hold some seats, but UIO-IAH is only 300 miles shorter and from a much higher altitude airport. DEN-PTY should be ok on the 73G. Plus it's going the correct direction wind-wise.

That being said, I'm not sure DEN offers anything that IAH doesn't already with most connections being duplicative. Add to that the non-existent local market and small DEN-SA market in general and it doesn't bode well for the route materializing. CM will not come to IAH unless they work it out with UA. They have a very cozy relationship and UA provides a lot of connecting traffic to CM via PTY. I do think a late IAH arrival, early AM departure by CM could be interesting as it would compliment the UA service, connect with different banks in the PTY hub and compete with TA. Only issue is it would be IAH O&D only.

Don't be so sure of that...have you been to PTY lately?

The Copa Airlines network once the above announced routes are added.....

CM fly to JFK from PTY, not to EWR ( according to that route map. )

I absolutely give up. I'm done dreaming for the day Copa announces BGI.

I´ll seemingly always be trapped having to do a MDE-MIA-BGI or MDE-PTY-POS-BGI odyssey to get home; hours longer and $100s more.

Very, very, very disappointed here.
