it is common for PMUA international flights to divert to
MSP. It is the best option if they 'think' the flight will cancel vs going to a place like
MKE where they may not be able to deal with that large of a plane. We all know
MSP can.
It is the closest 'international friendly' airport to
ORD and PMUA has a decent number of flights to
ORD per day, last checked almost 10 and add that to the
DL and
AA capacity to
ORD you can get passengers at least to
ORD or onward with
DL. It would be 'relatively' easy to get a crew up to
MSP from
ORD within a few hours to ferry the plane or plane with passengers down to
ORD when operations are closer to returning to normal.
at this point I have not seen PMUA make a diversion to a PMCO hub to make it 'easier', but I am sure others can correct me. The hubs are not all that close. We are not talking about
DL with DET and
CVG. I bet the 777 could make it to
MSP but would not have made it to
CLE. I also bet that since the storm that was hitting
ORD was heading east to
CLE they would be sending passengers just out in-front of the storm.
As a passenger I would have rather had gone to
MSP and get on a
DL flight to whereever I was going rather than trying to 'beat' the storm via
CLE.
