Well done Ryanair, within hours as well, and they can have the routes flying in 2 weeks, Its great to see an Irish success story. With this it demonstrates they have so much muscle and ability to move quickly when opportunity knocks.

Only basing 4 aircraft initially - I reckon that will grow pretty significantly in the next 6 months though.

They have a number of planes sitting idle over the winter, so it makes sense to get them back into revenue operation when such a good opportunity presents itself. Presumably there are crew members who are also relieved from duty or on less hours over the winter, but in this economic climate I should think it's not hard to gather enough staff to crew the flights.

Worth noting that this is not 100% finalised yet - "This largest ever investment in Hungarian aviation and tourism is subject to reaching final agreement with Budapest Airport today on costs, facilities and handling, and Ryanair’s Deputy CEO Michael Cawley has travelled to Budapest to finalise these negotiations with Budapest Airport and the Hungarian Government" (quote from the press release). Though they must be pretty certain the deal will be finalised to be accepting bookings

Lets see how this plays out with WIzzair...
Wizzair have been very lucky until now, only competing with FR on a handful of routes... Now they are going to be competing head to head on numerous routes and this is the first time FR and W6 have had a base at the same airport.
Today they also announced they will be basing two additional A320's at BUD, from the summer. Their route networks are almost identical competing on all the below routes, with slight variations on summer sun destinations:
Madrid, Barcelona, London (W6 LTN and FR STN), Brussels (CRL), Stockholm (NYO), Gothenberg, Milan (BGY), Rome (W6 FCO and FR CIA), Pisa and Eindhoven.
Wizz Air invests HUF 25 billion in its Budapest operation
Looks like Wizzair will have to get use to it, as I think FR are also intending to open a base at the new Warsaw Moblin airport later this year, and this is where they are moving all their Warsaw ops to as well!
The East European market is extremely price sensitive!
I wonder at what expense these four aircraft are being sourced from? As it's the winter, FR has a number of aircraft parked up. But I wonder if any aircraft are being pulled from other bases to open up BUD or will have an impact on future bases like PFO that are due to open soon?

Unfortunately most of the routes are not Malev replacements. They offered an excellent hub for connections to Central and Eastern Europe which will be very hard to replace. Places like Varna, Burgas, Sarajevo, Tirana, Pristina and Tivat have just become a lot harder and more expensive to reach. Austrian is the big winner.

DUB seems to eventually switch to a 5 per week operation using a BUD based aircraft from March.

I would say fortunately. Not many Malev destinations could win me for leisure weekend or week breaks. Now I just have so many to choose from from Budapest, for a fare 10x less !
And for business I always fly Skyteam, so this is a win win win win situation for me.

Anyway, I am using FR now in April to my favourite off season destination Lanzarote. BUD-MAD-ACE . I am very happy with Ryanair at BUD. BUD-MAD vv is actually a W6-FR combo.
