Saudi Boeing 747SP Weird Pic At Basel

Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:31 pm

Hi All:

Not sure if I am seeing this right, but take a look at the link below! Is that a person in front of the nose gear? The beacon is on so there I am guessing the engines are running and plane sure does not look like its on the parking area either...it seems like its taxiing.

It appears the right rear passenger door is cracked open for ventilation.

Those beacons are the old style rotating beacons. The beacons are identical to each other but because one is on the top and the other the bottom of the fuselarge, they rotate in opposite directions. So, I'll bet both are actually on.

Just cracking the door open does not provide ventalation, you need to fully open the hatch for that.

My guess is he is a maintenance worker looking at something very low on the NLG. But who really knows what he is doing. He does not have a headset connected to the airplanes intercom system. The airplane is not chocked, and the #3 engine is not running, but it looks like #1 and #2 are, as well as the APU. There arlso looks like there is mosture or frost on the right wing, indicating the airplane has just landed.

Maybe he is the "victim" of some sort of safety drill and the drill hadn't started yet.

He could also be some slacking ramp worker catching some shut eye in in the shade of the 747.

Given that it is SV, is he praying? He appears to be laid on his back with his arms outstretched, embracing the sun (God)? Does seem rather odd, but I doubt he'd be laying there if the plane was moving or about to move.

I've heard the Suadi Prince travels with a living heart donor...just in case. Perhaps he's had enough of his miserable job.

This reminded me of an archived pic of mine. Took a while to find it  http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z192/PrimavistaGiantSchnauzers/Aircraft%20Archived%20Pics/Aircraft0074.jpg

In my pic, it was low power engine runs.

No. The traditional traditional Islamic position of prayer is kneeling. And Islam doesn't worship the sun :/

#3 looks to be the same as #2, not running that is. And #1 isn't even in the picture, not is the wash from that engine, so I'm not sure how you deduce that it's on. And are you sure that's frost? Looks a lot like reflections of the sun against the various panels.

No headset attached...4R is cracked...do not think the big rolls are turning (no heat waves behind)...think the apu is on as the inlet doors are open and looks like heat wave distortion behind and hydraulics appear pressurized as no leading edge droop....and the gpu receptacle access door is hanging down. Wasn't this the aircraft they paid big bucks to convert to a two man cockpit like the 400?

You're kidding! I have never heard such a thing. That could either be s uper-crappy or super-awesome job...depending on if you are ever called into duty.

Just out of curiosity... what are the vertical streaks/discolorations on the forward fuselage (I can see two: one just ahead of the second door and extending to the wing fairing, and another beginning directly beneath the upper deck door)?

I believe it's called "dirt"    It's the water run off points from the guttering above the doors if you look closely.

I don't think he's anywhere near to being in front of the nose gear. The perspective is compressed.

Could it be that the belly beacon is another light placed somewhere behind the aircraft, creating the illusion of a beacon simply because of the angle from which the photograph was taken?

Cheers
Mats

Edit: On the other hand, it appears as if the aircraft is indeed on a taxiway without wheel chocks...

OK, so far:

- Possible person in front or under the main landing gear.
- No flaps, slats, or spoilers noticeable
- No chalks around the gears
- On a taxiway
- Engines do not appear to be on
- 4R is cracked open
- APU appears to be on

.....this is fairly far-fetched but who wants to speculate that this was Photoshop'd?

It looks like engine 3 is off. You can somewhat make out the individual fanblades.

LE edge is pneumatic or alternate electric and they don't droop on the 747 like the 727.

I can't seem to agree that it looks like the lower beacon is on. I see it as the bottom of a fence post in the fence line from behind the aircraft. But then again I could be wrong. The engines (at least the inboards) are definitely off. And as far as I can tell from skewing around in Google earth, it's sitting at the end of Rwy 08, which at ~5,200 feet seems awfully short to put a SP down onto. This has to be some kind of testing or maintenance.

Some of the center landing gear doors are open? Is that typical for an SP on the ground?

First thing that comes to mind is that the guy is looking at the nose wheel well. One would want to lie down on his back and look up, understandable. Especially comfortable if you are going to stay there more than a few seconds, it is not comfy to hunch and turn your head all the way upwards.

But what is weird is that the guy looks to have opened his arms, like a T shape! Now that's interesting!

The SP was AOG.....the guy didn't have his headset on to communicate. So he just put his ear to the ground to listen if the train the PAX would be transferred to for the onward journey was coming.

I think he's probably just taking a break. Or this pic was actually taken as a joke, since it looks like the nose gear is actually resting *on* him (which it of course isn't). It looks like one of those photos where you ask some people to walk in a field and then you stick your hand out in front of the lens and it looks like they're walking on your hand.

I'm sure it's one of those two things.
