Stolen C172 Crash. Unlicenced Pilot Killed

Thu Feb 09, 2012 1:06 am

C172 Stolen from CCR and Crash landed about 8 Miles west of FAT. Not to many details out yet. Kind of funny if you ask me! Anybody ever heard of anything like this happening?

Serves him right.

I wonder what he was planning on doing with it. I doubt it was meant to end up south of the border. The C172 has horrible payload. Narcos LOVE the cessna 2xx planes though, they frequently find them with well over 1000lbs of fine herbs in them.

Pretty bizarre. Makes you wonder what was going through that jailbird's head:

Quote:
According to Boston, the wreckage was full of "Cheez-Whiz" and other convenience foods including energy drinks. He told us there was a receipt in the plane from a Wal-Mart store in Stockton. He speculated the pilot stopped in Stockton after stealing the plane. The FAA is unable to verify any stopover at this point.

Reminds me of "Cannonball Run" where Burt Reynolds and Dom Deloise land their plane on Main Street to pick up a six pack of beer! Ah, the 70s!

http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_19913509 says he just had it annualed.

The aviation geek in me wonders how much TBO was left.

I know, I can't help it...

Seems the owner took good care of it.

The above article says his insurance will cover it. I hope there are no nasty surprises....

I don't think it's funny at all. He could've very easily killed someone else.

What do moronic car thieves do with cars? Drive them around a bit, then dump them. Nothing more than a joy ride in the air.

That's what I thought, but then that bizarre jailbird was found in the wreckage along with the Cheez-Whiz and the energy drinks. It made me wonder if that was his idea of "provisions" and if he was planning to run away from his problems.

But he didn't, so why does it matter? Yes, it would have been tragic if he crashed into a house or something, but that's not what happened.

Comedy=Tragedy+Time

In this situation, it doesn't seem very tragic, so it doesn't require much time before it's humorous. I mean, a moron steals a plane, fills it full of cheese wiz and red bull, then crashes it in ditch? There are less humorous ways for him to go. Like blowing up himself and his two boys like that moron in Washington http://www.torontosun.com/2012/02/05...-husband-two-sons-of-missing-woman , or this plane thief: http://www.google.com/search?client=...+crashes+at+mall&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 who killed his boy and crashed into a mall.

I agree with Maverick on this one, it's not funny. It's actually very serious!

Oh I don't know...because somebody was killed? It is easy to say "he got what he deserved" or something along those lines but a life is still a life. It is ashame that this person felt that it was worth taking such risks with his own life and endangering others for just a few minutes of desperate attention or pleasure.

Not to mention there is a hassle for the aircraft owner, etc. And who knows if there will be any security rammifications for private aircraft owners because of this and similar incidents. So I definitely do not think it is "funny".
None shall pass!!!!

A life clearly isn't a life in this case: he obviously didn't care about his or, far more importantly, anyone else's. I hate that phrase: is a life still a life when they use that life to spend their life being a dick-head and causing grief and lots of potential harm to others (and by a life being a life I assume you mean it's somehow therefore automatically valuable)?

It's just like those idiots who try and pinch the overhead power lines from a train line and get fried... Funny.

He got what was coming to him (there is a different nuance in that than there is "he got what he deserved").

And it was the second time he'd flown with no license (he may have flown more but we don't know that) and crashed. One thing is for sure though... He won't be doing it again

May not have necessarily "sanctioned" the idea, but he also may have just left the keys in it...

Here in WA we had Colton Harris-Moore who stole a number of aircraft and flew them unlicensed later crashing them somewhere.

GA aircraft aren't really that hard to steal. That never happened when I worked at a FBO but we used to keep a key ring with around 50 aircraft keys on it in case someone lost theirs. I never had a problem in 7 years unlocking the door and starting an engine of any small single or twin.

The thief seems to have had past run ins with the law. Previously, he crashed a plane, had stolen a car, and was on parole. If I had to guess, drugs and/or alcohol played a big part of his life.

The part about cheez whiz and red bull make you do a double take.

How funny!
A club or private owner now have their aircraft in a shambles.
Really something to crack up about, as an airplane enthusiast. (???)

I´d be gutted if it were a plane of our club, even more so if it were my own. Plus, financially it would be a major blow too!

Different folks for different strokes when it comes to humor, I guess.

This actually happened at my home airport KCCR - Buchanan. The fense is infact easily negotiated and you're on the grounds. The tower is staffed until 10PM, I believe, and only a single security car patrols the perimeter. Planes land and take off in the untowered period all the time, hense no one really paid any attention. I can tell you that a lot of folks are talking about wheel locks right about now....
