Mid summer of what....2015?? 0_o Seriously....have they even started the ball rolling on the DOT/FAA certs? Or...perhaps this is the outfit that perhaps bought USA3000s OC? I love to see a start up in the USA, but from what little we know, this seems a but amateur.

True, but they filled Newark with cheap seats, at a time they were few and far between. It was all slightly different back then, fares were highly regulated with masses of restrictions (like length of stay etc). and airlines like PEOPLExpress and Laker totally broke that mould.

I'm curious -- didn't Continental acquire the trademark on the brand when it bought the airline 25 years ago? Why for goodness sake would they allow it to be resurrected and most certainly tarnished by the virtually-certain impending flameout of this latest daft business plan?

It is. Go to flypex.com.

Lots of mumbo jumbo, few specifics.

What I find very interesting is the use of the old PEX logo. Granted it looks like it's been slightly altered but...somewhere along the line Continental must've given up its trademark on the PEX logo. I mention this because when Frontier resumed operations, the stylized 'F' logo and the colors were still under trademark to Continental. Had Frontier wanted to use the Saul Bass logo and coloring, they couldn't. But here is PeoplExpress using the original logo.

I'll try to stay positive. Hey, how many people scoffed at jetBlue when it first showed up. I know I did. Not sure if you can compare the two. But would I invest in this, no. I assume the 734s are used? Maybe old US Airways frames as they retire them. I don't think Boeing even makes 734s anymore, do they?

Isn't AS retiring their 734s as well? US, AS and charter carrier Miami Air are the only carriers in the U.S. that currently fly the type that I'm aware of.

It's a wonder what some stock photos and a photoshopped livery will do for credibility! Their website honestly looks like a slightly better version of the one I pieced together for a class project last year. I think the 6 month estimate was probably giving them too much credit- I doubt they ever fly a single passenger.

Looks like they did some homework:

Norfolk/Newport News = Navy, Coast Guard, General Dynamics

Providence = Navy (Newport), Coast Guard (New London), General Dynamics

I dont think theres room for both PVD and BOS though (BOS mentioned as a later maybe) but those entities arent likely to use BOS, so hopefully they stick with the current plan.

As an enthusiast be good to see something else in the air.. I think I only ever saw one People express 747 and I was very VERY young.

I wouldn't read too much into that, there are thousands of airplane silhouette graphics out there on stock art websites, which is likely what was sourced to design some of this (if you ever had to use stock art for design projects, you'd be amazed at the number of times you see the same recycled graphic in wildly different applications). The images used in other places are straight off of a stock art site.

Actually I'm sort of surprised at the choice of the 734. There are used 734s out there for cheap, but even cheaper would be MD-82s and MD-83s. Yes, they use more fuel, but the capital cost is very, very low, and they can be made to work with a smart, lean operation - just look at G4.

Exactly...there is no way in the name of all living creatures big and small the Feds will sign off on everything in 5 ot 6 months. Heck, it took CalPac a year just to get their financial fitness approved. Lets see how much $$$ the authority in PHF puts into this....for the sake of the bondholders, I hope they exercise more restraint than todays publicity blitz.

hmm I was very leary of a start up out of PHF when that new broke, I will give them credit in using a familiar name. But I dont see it lasting, weve seen to many of these come and go, most recently Skybus and Vision. Hope PHF has plan B in place when they go belly up.

I will give them 6 months.

Why so little time? I give them 1 year. Tops.

I see nothing in the press kit that makes me think they will be different in any way from any other carrier. They seem to think by letting their employees rotate jobs that they will provide better service. Well, ok, but then so what? Like that is going to make them stand out? I doubt it.

The fact that they are going to do this with some used 734's is telling, too, especially in an era of high fuel prices when everyone else is dumping these planes. It would seem the numbers behind their business model are not as stout as they could/should be.

Good luck to them. At least when they go under their name will be remembered longer than that other start-up of a few years ago (Skybus).

I wish them good luck and hope it works out alright. Tough environment to be starting a new LCC. Times have changed and there's much more government regulations and hoops to jump through just to satisfy the regulators.

I got my start in the airline industry six months out of college and got hired at the original PEx. It was an exciting time even though I got in toward the end. Within a year we were gobbled up by CAL. Going through yet another mega-merger twenty five years later. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Fly smart!

Anyone care to take a guess as to who the CEO will be? The press reports say the CEO is in place, but cannot be announced yet because it is the former CEO of another carrier. Fred Reid? Don Carty? David Siegel?

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see this airline get off the ground and at the very least stay afloat for a few years. With a great strategy and careful, thought-out planning, they just might make it.

The thing that gives me faith in this project is the strong attention to detail, and that they've done their homework and realized that to get an airline to succeed, they absolutely positively have to market themselves and make a splash in their local markets... an airline's not going to gain any kind of traction if people don't know who you are. While I don't know the market dynamics of Norfolk/Newport News well enough to say a 737-400 is the right-size aircraft, I think they're getting the branding and the marketing aspect of it right so far, and that's half the battle.

The livery looks yucky. And painted wings? Isn't that a waste of $$$?

I wonder if using WR Hambrecht & Co for helping with financing will benefit them even in this economic environment? WR Hambrecht & Co seems to attract motivated/individual investors that might be more willing to invest on an emotional level (sort of like the users of this site!) Not saying these type of investors are naive but someone can get in without risking a huge amount of money.
