Surely sounds like it. This is a very early announcement and IAD is definitely at the top of EK's hit list, although the airline seems bound for an ORD launch beforehand. I wouldn't be surprised that EK anyway makes it to IAD before EY though.

yes it will effect EU carriers market share from IAD to Middle East and Indian Subcontinent/BKK/SIN in particular and more so QR directly as that would be the closest competitor.
However with an alliance with AA domestically and IAD not being a hub airport for AA, EY will struggle filling its IAD-AUH services with healthy S/F combined with yield. Via IAD, they would only be code sharing with AA to LAX as AA does not have evening flights from IAD to DFW/MIA/BOS. In addition, QR is firmly established at IAD with UA using a bigger 335 seater B77W versus EY going to use a less efficient A346 (292 seater).
Also note that EY's capacity to India currently is heavily restricted with BOM MAA DEL COK TRV etc all operating with a daily A320 only and not with wide bodies nor double daily like QR hence there is a huge capacity bottleneck situation arising from AUH which in turn will hamper IAD flights as gaining access to inventory shall be tough.
Honestly speaking IAD does not look too promising for EY and it would be better suited using the A346 on launching a higher yielding route such as AUH-LAD 3 times per week or somewhere else in Africa in order to adequately feed its rapid China 2012 expansion strategy !

I am excited EY is finaly adding another US destination. But I question IAD. I would have thought another AA hub. But given how conservative EY is maybe they know what they're doing.

Your overall point it correct, but AA does in fact have IAD-DFW in the evening.

EY will do just fine to IAD. The Middle East, India and Africa are all strong markets for the DC area. Even though IAD is a UA hub and QR seems to be flirting with the *A, EY will do fine. EY will rely on AA for LAX and DFW traffic. I think EY is flirting with OW. I expect EY to add DFW, IAH and/or LAX next, in order to compete with EK and QR.
Air France has a lot to lose here: their IAD-CDG route feeds a significant number of high-yield pax to their African destinations, who now have an additional option in EY with a top-notch premium product...
EY, EK and QR are killing AF/KL and other European airlines. AF back in the day was enjoying North American traffic to Africa and India. Now these Mid East airlines offer a better product.

EYs African network is nothing compared to AF. In addition the only African route that would be connected in both directions to IAD via AUH is JNB! EY in Africa only fly to KRT NBO CAI JNB CPT LOS CMN and out of this only JNB connects. Yes if EK came to IAD then there would be a big problem for EU carriers on the IAD-Africa sector.
FYI, EYs DFW bound pax will fly via ORD and not via IAD because ORD-DFW has multiple daily frequencies after the EY flight arrives i.e. 4 vs 1 from IAD !
And yeah didnt the Venezuelan Govt purchase 4 EY A345s??? Or is this a mistake and its actually an A346.

was it confirmed that these were EY aircraft? - I thought the source airline was as yet unconfirmed
(my own theory was that with TG ending BKK-LAX non-stop, that the aircraft in question could be from TG: but then maybe I haven't been paying attention...)

No, IAD is a great pickup. There is significant movement eastward from IAD and I am frankly shocked that there are basically 3 flights to middle east from IAD. (DXB,DOH and JED). Not many people fly Saudi except Saudis so basically you have two flights for everyone else. They are pricey too. The demographics of the DC area have long supported this as well as the local economy.
EK dropped the ball on this imo but I believe its LH that loses the most because many people connected through Frankfurt on UA or LH.

UA also flies IAD-KWI-BAH. Long-term this route may not survive though as it was heavily reliant on defense contractors supporting the Iraq war.

Thats what I hear. Didnt that flight have really big losses in the first several months of operatrions? If so, there are times when it pays to suffer through the losses while the flight gets traction in yields. This might be an example of that.

I have flown QRs B77W in J class numerous times JFK DOH JFK as well as IAD DOH IAD along with EY's A346s once AUH-ORD and both products in the premium are very elegant indeed.
However from an in-flight entertainment + seat comfort point of view, QR beats EY hands down as QR's seats are wider which makes sleeping a lot more comfortable. Best business class I've flown on in the Middle East thus far is without a doubt Oman Air A332 BKK-MCT !

WY has a different strategy than EK,QR,EY. Its to concentrate on O&D Markets and develop Oman as a luxury holiday and culture destination which is happening. WY doesn't want to dominate the world and kill all other airlines!!, and it mostly serves premium heavy routes like LHR,CDG,FRA,MUC,MXP,ZRH and other routes in Asia and MENA.

Both routes will provide a good connection between IAD and the Middle East/Asia. Another route to put on my list of routes I want to fly.

I've never seen SV once at IAD. I've seen an abandoned gate with a SV sign, but no jet. QR must have that part of the world covered well from IAD.

I was thinking the same thing. I would imagine the answer is yes. Especially on the UA flight to Dubai which is very expensive virtually year round.

I hope the A380 stays but I can't imagine it being needed outside of the April-Aug time frame. Summer travel and students are a big market heading direct to Paris from the USA. I really don't know if its in needed in Fall/Winter.
