Alleged Big DL Announcement Coming Monday

A person on the Employee Involvement Group posted on Facebook about a "Big Announcement" coming this Monday. I don't know if it's base specific or if it's an company-wide announcement. Anyone have any inside information or care to speculate?

Is this like AA's "Big Announcement" - some cultural dance group performance at DFW?

Here are my thoughts:

Confirmed, but not officially announced news:
- LHR / LGW realignment (its reported in the press, but DL may issue PR here)

Plausible / semi-confirmed rumors flying around out there.
- Pilot Base Realignments:
- Early Retirement Packages
- DC9 fleet staying into 2013
- 20 more RJs leaving the fleet in 2013
- New program rules for Skymiles / Skypriority / Elite status 2012 program year

More far-fetched rumors:
- Delay in 739ER deliveries
- Order for the narrowbody replacement that was postponed from 2011
- Network realignments (MEM / CVG)
- Anything involving AA

Completely mundane news:
- Some new celebrity chef that is updating the menu
- Expanded technology
- "enhancements to the website"

Well, being it's going to be announced Monday I venture to say something positive at least for the stock price. Since most negative news events happen on a Friday, after the Market is closed so not to negatively impact the stock price.

That is not necessarily true. The news could be positive or negative depending on your situation. The markets can react favorabily to what may be negative news for employees & communities.

Based on the fact it was posted on "Employee Involvement" facebook page, it is likely something pertaining to employees and likely more of an internal matter. If it was some truly big news I don't think a teaser like that would show up on a facebook page.....

, and then I wome up lol. As far as I can remember from their last investor presentation they said no big earth shattering announcements this year. I wonder if todays announcement for a board meeting soon has to do with the big announcement on mon. A coincidence or not.

DL is buying AS and half of AS's routes will be discontinued within the first year. The other half will be gone within 5 years.

Kind of odd to do that after announcing the end of MIA-LHR. Not that dropping the route wouldn't make sense, it would. But from a PR perspective you would probably rather announce the partnership and then do the rightsizing.

The DC-9-50's are staying on into 2013. Confirmed from multiple flight ops sources.

What's not confirmed is why...I have heard Delta is grounding an additional 20 CRJ-200's and with the equipment flow involving larger Connection planes, the -50's are needed. Also going around is a rumor that the 737-900ER's won't be showing up as quickly as expected in 2013. Not sure I buy that one as much as making up slack with more 50-seaters leaving.

FWIW Delta's doing a technology tune-up, as they like to call it, on Sunday at 3:30am (more info here).

A VS partnership would be interesting. Codeshares would certainly be nice

An announcement that VS is picking SkyTeam would be even cooler, and SQ following VS would be the icing on the cake

I don't think the DC9s sticking around would qualify as a "big" announcement (although I'm all for it).

While that would qualify as a big DL announcement here in New Zealand I doubt very much whether a single new route would qualify as a big announcement in the US.

In a cost saving measure DL is going to introduce the new shared snack program. In this program two pax have to share one bag of peanuts or pretzels.

DL is doing a couple new seasonal routes out of MCO. Maybe they are looking to revive that hub or at least expand that operation since WN and FL are merging and reducing competition to MCO. Just wildly speculating. I hope nobody sees my snack idea and runs with it lol.

From talking to DL people, I believe the only news to give will be early retirement packages. The announcement will be considered "big" because of their size. I can't imagine anything else impacting employees that significantly being announced. Note that Wall Street will see this is a "positive" as Delta is getting rid of overhead and cutting its non-fuel costs, which have continued to grow in spite of the steps taken last year. It's a good idea to announce this on a Monday, as the move will likely give DL a much-needed bump in its stock price.

Don't you just love how corporate airlines have become? It's not about trying this or that route anymore for the sake of creativity, it's about the bottom line and the stock price. I suppose it was always supposed to be about profitability, but carriers like DL are actually taking that seriously these days, and the impact on employees has been a move from a fear of failure and layoffs to the impacts of cost-cutting and increasing demands on workload and performance. I don't think the unions were ready for that shift as the focus has always been on scope and saving jobs, so we'll have to see how that pans out in the next round of contract negotiations among the different carriers.

Well, I do not see how or why it should be any other way. The current stockholders own the airline and are risking their money in an industry where a company can lose more money in a single year than it has made over its entire 70 year history. And the history of the airlines of the world is littered with the carcasses of the thousands of airlines that have failed.

Seriously, it could happen. Or we could see more orders for 77L or 777-200ER. Maybe 737-800 to replace the MD-80s?

Concerning routes, is it possible to see....

Hubs at MEM and/or CVG being eliminated for good. That capacity to be moved somewhere else...perhaps expansion at LAX, LGA, or opening a new hub at MIA or DFW.
