KE A380 To FRA

Sun Feb 26, 2012 12:43 am

Surprised that they picked FRA to be the first European city instead of CDG or LHR, perhaps too much competition from other carriers at CDG and LHR.

I suspect it is the premium competition at LHR. The next 'high premium' airport in Europe is FRA. With KE's configuration, they'll be going after high premium markets initially.

It could also be gates or timing (I do not know KE's slot times at LHR. That could impact the ability to sell J seats.)

It's probably that LH J customers look like low hanging fruit to KE with LH's outdated J. KE has true flat seats, two J lounges as well as excellent service.

By the end of March, I see that they're moving their double dailies ICN-JFK into daily ICN-JFK and ICN-FRA. A bit curious which route will get the up-gauge when the 6th frame arrives by the end of the year. Without interrupting current services (FRA, JFK, LAX, and HKG each daily), I suspect it will be ICN-BKK but this route is mostly leisure, unless they're introducing their first high density configuration (430+ for regional flights).

The only true competition at CDG is a three weekly OZ flight (I don't think we can see AFs daily flight as real competition as they're in the same alliance). At LHR there's only a daily OZ flight (I don't recall BA flying to ICN).

After the delivery of HL7614, for a short time they were sending 380 to CDG. by following flightradar24, i saw HL7612, HL7613 and HL7614 serve CDG several times (maybe for 2 weeks?)

Korean are increasing capacity to London in the spring by adding an additional service into Gatwick (thats right Gatwick) using a 772ER and as for competition currently they have Asiana on the route using a 772ER into Heathrow (They also use B744 into Frankfurt)

They REAL issue is that Korean have little onward in-aliance connections beyond Heathrow unlike Paris.

There is no premium competition at LHR for KE at the present time. BA hasn't flown to ICN for around 10 years so KE only has competition from OZ.

On a scheduled, regular basis?

As much as I heard from FRA recently, yes. Im eager to see them soon, and good to see the 77W being replaced. Imho the KE livery is so far the best on the A380.

Are they trying to indirectly compete with the 380 on the NRT - FRA route?

I guess they can codeshare on the routes from FRA to AMS/CDG and anywhere else AF and KL codeshare from FRA fly. Maybe they will eventually switch the 380 over to AMS or CDG for the purpose of codeshare/connections.

not surprising at all in my view, as FRA has always been the first of the three major european hubs served by KE to receive their newest premium inflight product, always before CDG and LHR, guessing it would be the more important premium market for them, even without the huge Skyteam onwards connections as compared to CDG. They apparently served CDG with the A380 for a few weeks last fall, three times per week if I am not mistaken, and that was it. Trust that KE sees an economical reason for pulling them off one of the two daily rotations to JFK and instead deploying them on the FRA run. Although I should imagine that this will b a seasonal change (like the current winter when they only used a mix of 77Ws and 772s for FRA).
But it is just a casual observation from my side........

You need to look at this from a broader perspective, it's (CDG,FRA,LHR) - Asia, in particular China, S.Korea, and Japan. One thing FRA has at the moment is lack of EK A380 and they're probably trying to capture the market now before everyone else (EK and TG on the horizon). It's quite possible that by the winter they'll move this back to second ICN-JFK flight (KE 85/86) if the demand diminishes after August.

Correct. Even when CDG, LHR and FRA were all 744 routes, FRA was the only destination in Europe to consistently receive the most updated "74K" configuration, whereas CDG and LHR received the older "74L" configuration with the older style sleeper seats from circa 2000.

KE doesn't serve AMS-ICN even daily (and currently doesn't have a terminator flight, though this will change in S12) and won't be in S12 ("just" 4 weekly A330-300s). AMS will have a very long way to before it will receive a KE A380....

Many Korean companies have located their German / European HQs in the FRA area, e.g. Hyundai, Kiia and Samsung to name a few. There is a small Korean community as well. That helps OZ and KE fill the front of their cabins quite a bit...

3 weekly flights to CDG. But I don't know if that information is still accurate.

go check on either

http://data.flight24.com/flights/ke901/

or

http://www.libhomeradar.org/databasequery

then you would see that they served CDG with the A380 only between September 26 and October 28, 23011 and not a single time since... but of course you're right in saying that CDG was the first european city to be served by the A380.
