Travolta's Jet Used For Pan Am Show?

Sun Feb 26, 2012 4:13 pm

Came across this and sparked my interests for two reasons. First one is they used Republic Airport on Long Island which is where I'm from and looks like they flew up Travolta's Jet to use in the show. Had no idea they were filming at this time otherwise I would have gone over to check things out. Couple friends of mine work there. Anyway, thought this was pretty interesting.

Travolta's Jet Used For Pan Am Show?

They used Travolta's jet for one episode (I've forgotten which one).

For the other episodes they use a life-size mock-up of the 707 that is kept in one of the hangars at Republic. I heard that it is one of the most major costs to the production budget. If you do a bit of Googling you should be able to find more information on it. It obviously has no mechanical parts in it, but it looks amazing in the show!
Flying refined.

The ABC show "The Chew" showed the flight deck is an old DL plane. Here is a link to the video. The DL flight deck is shown at 0:51 in the video. It video also shows the cabin mockup, and props department.

Actually, JT's B-707 doesn't look that bad in the PA livery of the '60s and the red "V-Jet" tail makes the PA livery a little more colorful.

Right The one that went from having straight pipe JT-4's upon landing to turbine JT-3D's. You had to look real quick, but it was as they were reboarding the airplane after it sat on the ground in PAP.

I also enjoyed the fact that the airplane sat with some of the external lights and most of the cabin lighting on for several hours with no ground power. They also managed to start the engines with no air-start. Ahhh....it's all for fun.

For the other episodes they use a life-size mock-up of the 707 that is kept in one of the hangars at Republic.

The mockup is at the Steiner Studios in Brooklyn. They also used the Grumman Studios in Bethpage for some of their green-screen shots of the old PAA terminal at JFK. The only times they have been at FRG was for the pilot episode, when they brought the Eastern DC-7 in (twice last year) and with Travolta's 707 last October.

Here's a look from the visit.

Thanks John. I thought that comment about hangars at Republic was way off.

Its amazing really what they even bother with the mock up considering how much CGI was put into the episodes!

Jeez! Give the show some credit. At least they tried harder than any other show I have seen on TV to get the facts straight. If you want 100% realism, go start up Flight Simulator or watch a JustPlanes DVD...
Of course it's not the real deal. Speaking for myself, I had a good time watching it and am kinda sad that it seems like they are gonna cancel it. If you are that picky you should stop watching movies/tv shows in general

I agree with you though when there's a movie that shows them departing on a B727, cruising in a Fokker 50 and landing in a 747.

Just as I'm sure cops and doctors pick apart movies and TV shows with their professions, it's pretty hard for an airline employee not to notice the details. I watched every week in spite of the errors and hoped it would come back.

Sadly, the show's writers and producers didn't realize it wasn't enough to simply roll out the PanAm name and capitalize on the recent fad of 60's retro-cool time piece TV programs. They would have been better served to hire a creative consultant or two and concentrate on the writing.

Only became aware of the series through this thread. It reminded me of a 1980s TV series from the former GDR telling the life of an Interflug IL62 flight crew and their adventures while flying across the world (in fact, mostly to Socialist countries such as Vietnam, Nicaragua or Cuba) - PAN AM seems to be pretty much the same concept, albeit in a different setting. Check out the trailer for some nice 1980s feel:

It seemed as the writers didn't really know what they wanted the show to be/become.
Still, I really liked it. The whole setting, the warm colored pictures, going to far-away places and of course the charm of those days paired with planes (and beautiful girls...) - exactly the right thing to shut down your brain and just get entertained for 40 minutes in the evening.
Even though they didn't officially cancel it yet, I'm pretty sure they are going to in May. If you look at the viewers and ratings, they went downhill from the first episode on to the end. ABC is known for having high requirements regarding these two factors, so I would be (positively) surprised to see Pan Am come back for a second season.

It was very entertaining and a guilty pleasure of mine. I just think they could have done a lot better job of selling the premise of 60's air travel and the time period itself. Especially two of the most defining moments of that generation. JFK's assasination is only barely touched on and the Beatles coming to America in February of 1964 is not even mentioned.

I think it's as good as dead since some of the actors have already found other gigs from what I've read.

True. The last episode was New Years Eve and the boys didn't come to the US until February. I stand corrected.
