AA 757 Interior Refurbs

Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:40 pm

Is anyone keeping track of the AA 757 interior refurbishments? I believe this project is moving forward with the exception of the 757s they're going to park. How many have been done so far? Seats look like the new seats in the 737-800s.

30 757's have been converted, 64 remain. I don't know though how many of those 64 left will be sticking around for the refurbs. The company recently said they plan to continue with the refurbs, but that some aircraft won't get the complete refurb -- they did not elaborate, however, on what will and won't be redone.

Rode on an AA 757 yesterday from SJU to DFW. It still had the big CRTs hanging from the ceiling.

I have been flying AA every week for almost 4 years now and have only had the misfortune of being on their 757s once, and it was indeed the old one with the big CRTs. Absolutely terrible inside from a customer experience perspective, hope they're either a) getting rid of them soon or b) doing something about the interiors.

Aren't they the ex-TWA aircraft with those seats?

AA doesn't operate any ex-TWA 757s anymore; most were acquired by DL and operate today as DL's 75E fleet. And actually, the ex-TWA 752s actually had nicer F seats (with winged headrests) compared to the original AA 752 F seats.

I flew a few of them lately, all the old ones. MIA-MCO, MCO-MIA, MIA-ORD, ORD-MIA.

Any of them have Wifi yet?

One, but it isn't turned on for customer use yet. It's still under going FAA testing and awaiting approval.

These pix are just of first class, but coach isn't all that different. New seats (identical to new 738s front and back), new lavs, sidewalls, LCD monitors and carpet. You can pretty much see all the improvements in just the first class photos.

In January I flew MIA-UIO-MIA, and got a new one down and an old one back.

The improvement is really noticeable. Obviously the biggest difference was in F (those tan seats do look very dated), but even in Y the new interior was a lot nicer.

Is it not possible to refurbish the 757 to a standard which is closer to the new interior in the 738, with skylight etc.?

Boaz.

The Sky Interior can't be retrofitted, although there is a company (can't think of the name right now) that makes a look-alike product (sidewalls, pivot overhead bins, LED lighting) that can be retrofitted to old 737's and 757's.

The company is Heath Tecna, and the package is known as Project Amber.

They are 21" wide, just like the outgoing seats.

I flew on one of the old ones in July DFW-LAX and was kind of nostalgic about it. While I do prefer an updated cabin, it definitely felt like a throwback. Also thought the sidewalls were cool looking too. It was nice to see something other than pure white sidewalls.

I've flown F on the 757s plenty of times, and I don't think the old tan seats were all that bad. Shrug.

A bit off topic, but how is the refurbishment of the 738s delivered prior to 2002 going? Last summer, I flew on a 738 from ORD to SEA that was a newer plane, delivered in 2010. So, it had the drop-down monitors.

Coming back, it was an older 738. Even though it had the cockpit upgrades (the eyebrow windows had been blocked out), the cabin had the older seats and the CRT monitors mounted over the aisle.

I was under the impression that each plane would under its cockpit upgrade and cabin refurbishment at the same time.

There are now 6 rows in F. The previous version had 5 rows on the A/C seat side and 6 rows on the D/F side. New seats in F. Closet removed in back of seats 5 A/C. I always like that closet there, as it gave one a more "private" feel if you were seated in 6 D/F. Oh well.

Hey Mike your a star ! Thanks so much . Yeah that sounds right from memory . We were at the gate quite a while. I was kind of too tired to worry and I was enjoying being inside the AA B757 cabin. I was really impressed by them .

Thanks alot again

Sounds like a "typical" AA flight out of MIA on a 757... actually, a bit shorter of a delay than usual!

Yeah, a place in my chiropractors office - there was a hard bar that would hit me about mid back on those old seats - flying LAX-DFW-LAX once a week for a year did a number on me. I won't miss them at all!

Well, a lot of the design is from the late '90s. The seats themselves are different and so are the LCDs, but the decor is pretty much the same as what was first installed on the 738 and 772ER.

When the 77W comes it will have different interior decor.

This is a bit distressing (bold emphasis is mine):

In addition, American, the first airline to launch inflight Wi-Fi Internet service in North America, will expand its Wi-Fi product offering to nearly all aircraft used to fly within the continental United States, including select 757s.

http://aa.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=3465

I'm hoping by "select" they mean "every 757 except for the ones used on TATL routes" and not "we're going to put Wi-Fi on a few of our domestic 757s and not bother with the rest."
