LH 748 First Revenue Route?

Does anyone know what the scheduled first routes are going to be with this aircraft? I assume the United States. Is this going to be equipment we're going to see a lot of here or is it mainly to other regions like Asia or Africa?

I am flying FRA-Mumbai at the end of March, but I think that 744-route is not prestigious enough to be the first one with the 748I although I expect it to be served by the new Jumbo Jet later.
I assume first will be a North American destination. That would fit best. My guess is Chicago, Boeings HQ city.

I would say the config will be published earlier as it seems to be that there will be some short flights done (same as with the 380 back then) to get some of the crew trained.

Would love to see MIA with the seasonal downgrade to the 744 from the A380 maybe they will want just a bit more capacity in the summer. I would put my money on ORD or JFK.

The 747 will be weird to partition for Lufthansa. The upper deck -- where, IIRC, the current F class is on the 747-400 -- is longer, and probably "too big" for the first class product. So, all Business up there? Where would F go? Nose? Will be interesting to see the final configuration.

I understand that the bed+seat will only be on the 744, as the -8 will have another F seat.

I realize that BA has a marketing requirement to "turn left" at 1L for F -- I think that's a mistake on the 744.

This is why I love VS Upper Class -- I love sitting between doors 1L and 2L...

And I love it. I think the unique triangular front compartment of a 747 is the most special and intimate place to fly in. I prefer it to the narrow upper deck.

No, it will be the 380 F class. The one with the bed was only for the upper deck of the 744.

I know not a lot people like it to be in the nose, but the 748i upper deck is too long to put only 8 F class seats up there. That's why it moved into the nose section.

Once the first flight took place, it will be daily. So if the first flight is before the 14th, and you will be on the right flight, it is 748i

Are there any airport-wise restrictions at IAD that would prevent LH from a daily 380 flight? UA and LH have a combined number of 5 flights during the summer. I assume that the 380 would work on that route aswell...

Is there a delivery schedule for their 748s? How many will they receive in 2012? LH sure has one of the most interesting fleets of all airlines - and not 777 yet *knocks on wood*.

Not that I am aware of. 380 is possible as well.

One in March, one in June, 2 in July, one in September, so total 5 in 2012 from what I know.

How is it possible that people don't prefer the nose section? It is just about as private as the upper deck, MUCH quieter than the upper deck, and I personally feel the nose section as being more spacious. Further, as much as I REALLY like sitting in the heights of the upper deck, boarding can be a dash messy at times because of passengers dragging their bags up the stairs. At any rate, so long as it's the 747, I don't care about where the heck my seat is!

I don't know why, but from what I heard is that people like being 'above' the rest and the area up there is more privatly and exclusivly... At least that is what I heard. You have a small 'airplane' for yourself up there and you get to see the pilots

Not that I am aware of. 380 is possible as well.

AF flies it to IAD, so certainly there is no restriction, assuming there are adequate gates at the terminal which is used by LH, if this is a different one from AF's. (I have never been through IAD, hence my ignorance!)

I always see the AF 380 on the other side of the same Terminal concourse. So I guess the 380 shouldn't be a problem for IAD. Question is: do we need so many seats to IAD? Or is it maybe better needed somewhere else?

That is true. Same for JFK where you have 2 flights a day. 380 is planned for one flight and 744 for the other (once we get the next 380 delivered). And BOS has 2 flights as well. Usually it is one smaller and one bigger airplane. 330 and 744/ 380 combination.
That gives a good balance between frequency and capacity.

Interesting to see the speculation. It certainly will be a high yielding airport isnce the airplane will have a large business class cabin. 92 business class seats is almost the same as the A380, yet they will be full flat horizontal seats unlike the current inclined product, so it is a higher quality product. I'd expect the 747-8 to be used on much higher yielding routes since the A380 is more dense with a large economy section and has about 170 additional seats over how the 747-8 is being configured.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it on routes that both UA and LH share since the new LH business product is flat like UA's new business product.

India is out of the question. LH is seat-capacity wise restricted to Boeing 747-400 ONLY. So even if they bring the 7478, they wont be able to fill it completely!. So i highly doubt its India.
From what my friends said, i think DXB stands a big chance. Also, ORD has a high potential to receive the 7478.

No, don't know the limit. Only heard that it is 744 limited. But currently LH isn't too much in sending more seats to India as the market is very difficult down there at the moment, CCU and HYD were closed already. So let's see what's next.

So I guess they stick to the 744 and 340 flights into India and send the 748i, 380 to some other places where higher demand is for more seats and more premium costumers are around, due to the large C class in 748i and 380.

Yes, I heard that something like that is planned. But I guess what is meant here in the thread is the first long haul revenue flight.

AFAIK, the only limitation is gates. There is only one gate at IAD that can handle the 380 and AF is using it (A20/22). I think if MWAA saw it necessary, then they can very quickly change another gate to handle the 380 (by raising a second jetbridge nice and high)

I somehow feel the A380 is too big for MIA and see the 748 as a better aircraft for the route but I hope I'm wrong as I love the A380 that much
