Its africa. Having lived in africa 30 years, I can assure you ive seen lots of weird stuff on airfields. Wildlife is hard to keep out. Climbing people even more so.

I operated into a strip in Zambia that had people forever crossing it. This was to the point that if you waited for the strip to be clear, you would be waiting all day. We would takeoff and land and people would still be running across. I never got close to collecting one but with the locals the way the often are, I can totally see how it happens.

That is something that should be looked at in some depth. In this country of all places obsessed with health and safety, that just seems like a death/accident waiting to happen.

It's a tragedy though in the video posted by
that aircraft is landing on the town's principal street, and we all know that if someone crosses at that moment, there is no way to stop a plane just after touch down (BTW talk about bush pilots) there seem to be not even enough space to make a go after the touch. Dangerous for the pedestrians, for the crew and the craft.

Without knowing the exact details it's hard to know, but it is quite possible he was already on the ground with a clear runway and she wasn't looking and ran across. In that case, it may have been impossible for him to go around.

In many countries around the world, it is quite normal for people to be on the runway at the smaller, more rural airports. That's if the "airport" is even an airport at all and not just a good section of road or an empty field near a school or a house or what have you. I've seen pictures of some "runways" that double as a kids soccer field. If a pilot wants to land, he makes a low pass first, which the locals know means to clear the way because he wants to land.
If you look at the chart EGSUcrew posted in reply 8, there is actually a published pedestrian path across this runway at the particular airport in question.

It appears the runway is a divide between the workers of the quarry and the settlement. This obviously happens everyday judging by the path made.

Yeah I wasn't making any accusations towards the pilot, I was just saying that's the drill at Clacton.

Well it's only a small airfield and all visiting pilots are required to PPR and have a brief, I think everyone (pedestrians included) have become used to the situation. It just doesn't always stop them standing on the path taking pictures whilst you're on a half mile final...

Down in Guyana sometimes the pilots flying to the interior have to "buzz" the runway to clear the animals on it before landing.

We unfortunately have frequent RR pedestrian incidents in our US town and state. Sometimes MP-3 players are involved, but not always. It is surprisingly difficult for a person in a noisy environment to notice and intuit what direction the noise is coming from.
Buffet: the airline business...has eaten up capital...like..no other (business)

There comes a point during landing where on the runway you don't have enough airspeed to go around, yet still to much speed to be able to stop. It is simple physics. So giving pedestrians, vehicles, livestock, etc. right of way over the airplane is just stupid.

While I will say 'sad', this seems like a great candidate for the Darwin award...
Africa or not, the common sense/intelligence required to not stand in the way of something 25 times your size coming at you at roughly 75mph needs to prevail, and if it doesnt, chances are you would have probably been killed walking off a cliff or tying a brick to your feet and jumping in a lake wanting to go fishing or something...
I know it sounds callous, but you dont need a thorough knowledge of aviation (or physics) to realize you need to get the hell out of the way. Sorry, I feel for her family (provided they are a few IQ points higher), but moreso feel for the pilot(s). The image is not one I would want to live with no matter the circumstances.

At Clacton, if a pedestrian had entered the airfield, the aircraft MUST go around/hold short (but then this is no different to a normal runway incursion). Although pedestrians have the right to walk out when an aircraft is on final, it is relatively rare. The "right of way" thing is not publicised to them and they will usually wait through common sense if nothing else.
Also, I was not suggesting that the pilot in this case should've gone around, I was responding to a post regarding runway incursions at EGSQ, not the incident airfield.
I should also point out that in 50 years, there has been no loss of life or injury as a result of crossing the runway. In this nanny-state, do you think the CAA would approve a clearly unsafe airport?

A Mooney approaching touchdown makes very little noise aside from the chirp of the tires on landing. What little sound it does make is primarily behind it. Knowing nothing about the airport in question it could be possible that ambient background noise or conversation among the women could have easily drowned out the aircraft.

We had a ground agent a few years ago at EWR who became distracted and accidentally walked into a running engine on a SAAB340. Passengers, pilots and flight attendants were traumatized. It is so easy to lose control of your whereabouts when you are concentrating on getting the aircraft off the gate. This woman was absolutely beloved by all her NW colleagues and our hearts went out to her husband and children.
