EVA Starts JFK-TPE Non Stop Starting 18Jun12

Sun Apr 01, 2012 4:42 pm

This was announced in Feb, but I didn't see any posts on it.

http://www.evaair.com/html/b2c/engli...VAAir_News_Non_Stop_NewYork_en.htm

77W has more than enough legs to do JFK-TPE non-stop (BR already flies TPE-JFK non-stop), but BR has always stopped in ANC for fuel on westbound flights. Someone once said that's because PRC would not let Taiwanese carriers into their airspace and fly directly to Taiwan. If that's still the case, I wonder what changed to allow BR fly non-stop JFK-TPE. Maybe less cargo?

Great move by BR, btw. They're jumping on the opportunity CI opened when they decided to change their schedule from JFK.

Its more likely they used to have to take a payload hit westbound due to headwinds,( distances via ANC add only @200nm GC compare to a direct flight overflying Russia and PRC) but with a depressed cargo market (and it was never as good westbound even in good days) they now have enough reserve to go non stop JFK-TPE.

Though with price of oil, it may not be that great a savings going direct compared to a ANC stop. Anyone know how do ANC fees and fuel costs compare to other airports?

They also have a daily 747-400F flight, this could allow most cargo to travel via that service.

The relations between Taiwan and the PRC have been easing over recent years, and there are flights operating between the two countries again, to what level I do not know. Don't know if it's like US Cuba flights, or scheduled, charter or what. I am unable to remember what news I saw it on, I want to say DW or BBC but I was amazed at the short article showing a CI plane departing TPE, supposedly to SHA or PEK.

CX flies JFK-HKG with a 77W, do they take a hit on cargo?

Both JFK-HKG/TPE would be trans-polar routings which follow the meridians which makes the winds pretty much perpendicular and thus reduce the on the nose effect to probably less than 10k
A 77W at about MTOW uses about 9.3t of fuel for a takeoff and landing versus about 8.3t per cruise/hour. Hard to say if the fuel stop at ANC is worth it when all the other costs are added in.

Yes, they do. That's why on top of the 4 daily 77W pax, there are also 4/5 weekly 744/748 cargo flight to JFK via ANC.
That said, CX's 77W is in a less-dense configuration than those of BR, so you have to factor it as well.
