Airbus A330 Family: The Right Aircraft, Right Now!

Wed Apr 04, 2012 1:31 pm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMhyU-VwK5A

Just seen a really nice video of the A330 family.

Of course, I wouldn't mind one of those Corporate Jet versions... but I'd also settle for the Ferrari in the A330 Freighter!

I think it is a Portuguese F16? Definitely Spanish F/A18 aircraft...

Yes, 15112 of the PoAF.

I wish they'd flown a bunch of them in a real formation flight rather that the computer generated stuff.

I'm not quite sure who the target group of this video is? The airlines or passengers? The videos say literally nothing about the aircraft themselves. Nothing about range, cruise speed, noise emission, fuel consumption, cargo space, passenger floor space, cabin noise levels, maintenance costs, technical aspects, innovations, etc. All they do is show the cabins that could just as well be installed on virtually any other jet. The image quality of the footage was also not exactly high def marketing video like. But after all this complaining, I really liked the music

Beside that, with the introduction of the 787, the A330 is a past-generation jet from now. Though meaning not that is a bad aircraft.

The title of the video "Right aircraft, right now" almost makes me think they're feeling a bit sheepish about the A350 delays.

It was a nice video, but I'm not exactly sure what the point is. It's not as if a customer would either 1) see the video and pick up the phone and order a fleet of A330s or 2) book a ticket specifically on the A330.

I guess it's meant to be taken literally - if you buy an A330 at least you have some certainty as to when you'll get it!
And on the lease market a 2-class A330 with type A doors goes like hot cakes...all the charter operators love that configuration. Good yield, right size, good range on the A332 and good capacity on the A333.

In a sense it's the one we don't talk a lot about. It does the job, and doesn't hit the headlines which in a way is what you want... I particularly like the MRTT shots, and finally the freighter nose "bump" doesn't look as bad as it did maybe on some of the early graphics...

Obviously the corporate jet version is the one I'd love to be able to afford to have some day!

Like most ads by such companies, especially on the internet, the aim is just to create buzz. It's aimed at everyone and no one in particular at the same time.
Airbus knows better than anyone how beneficial this can be thanks to the A380...

Sure, but it's available. And it does meet planned fuel consumption targets, also.

On the freight version of the A330, i saw a little hump where the front gear retracts in to. What is the hump for and is it only on the freight models or on all models?

It is only of the freighter. The nose gear on the A330F is slightly longer (or maybe it is set slightly lower, someone else can clarify) than on the passenger version in order to create a flat floor to make loading cargo easier; if you look at pictures of passenger A330s you can see it has a slight nose down pitch when on the ground. The nose bump accommodates the nose gear changes.

Correct, it's to create a more even loading floor.

Fun video. Is the fuel tanking of two planes at a time a current capability or a planned one?

Yawn - not that impressive a video to me. I agree that the "cellular fission" open stunt is kind of cheesy.

I find the claim "The A330 is the backbone of the world's wide-body fleet" to be a bit disingenuous.

According to the Airbus website (1) the A330 family has 854 deliveries.
The 767 has 1019
Didn't the 777 just celebrate it's 1000th?

Both are wide-bodies, both in production, both with more deliveries.
Must be basing it on orders, for which the 330 series has a few more than the 777.

Which aren't nearly as bad as the 787 delays. That's what they're really going after. "You want a plane to fly this many passengers x miles with excellent economics? We have it for you and you can have it right now, rather than waiting a decade if you order the 787."

I still love quoting Mr. Leahy's comment that if there were any delays on the A350 program, he ought to be shot. Oddly, it's hard to find that quote around these days...

I love the fact that the A330s are rendered with the RR Trent 700 engines on (My favorite on the type) ....

But I don't know if you guys noticed that the engines in the video are rendered to be slightly larger than the actual geometry - I mean - I'm not expecting the actual geometry there - BUT - by God those slightly wider engines make those high aspect ratio wings (relative to the 767, A300, etc) make her look like a sexy beast.

Really no airliner can make the claim to be the "backbone of the world's wide-body fleet." For some airlines, the A330 family certainly is their backbone, but for others, it's the A340, or the 777, or the 747.

Amen. A330 is a good aircraft, but "backbone" is a bit of an exaggeration.

I agree 100%. If the video had said the "backbone of Airbus's wide-body fleet" or if an airline had claimed it as the backbone of their fleet, it would have been credible and appropriate. But when you speak for "the world" you'd better be able to back it up. It actually devalues the aircraft and ad - unfortunate.

Agree, although I think that it's a bit of overkill for an A330. I would have gone with something a bit less "epic" and more "uplifting."

The A330 is a great plane, but the music is a bit too weighty for that model, in my opinion. That music would fit the A380 better.

I used to dislike the A330 with a passion, back in the 90's, but in the 2000s and 2010s, I grow to like and respect the a/c, but I still would rather fly on a 787.
