Quoting jcarv (Reply 3): it's rumored JAL can only accpect RWY 15R/33L for departures due to severe company obstacle clearance restrictions. JAL & Massport trying to work out the problem. |
Quoting ChrisNH (Reply 56): How would JAL crew these flights? Would we expect that the entire crew that brought in the plane today take it back to Japan tomorrow? Does that give theme enough rest? |

Quoting ha763 (Reply 62): Quoting SYfan100 (Reply 59): Wonder what New York thinks about Boston getting the first JAL 787 flight and not them? Nothing. JFK was the first destination for JAL's flagship 4 class 777-300ER while BOS gets a 2 class 787-8. The 787-8s so far delivered to JAL do not even have Premium Economy seats. |
Quoting rob2507 (Reply 65): Good story here on some of the efforts that Massport and the local business community put together to make this flight a reality. Interesting that JAL will get a full rebate of all landing fees for the first year of service. Also notes, unofficially, that load factors for the first eight weeks are at 90%. http://blogs.wickedlocal.com/massmar...A04WP |
Quoting richierich (Reply 64): JFK gets regular A380 service, BOS does not. The 787 will be at JFK one day, cannot say BOS will ever see regularly scheduled A380s. |

Quoting crosswinds21 (Reply 76): Is the 787 already experiencing mechanical problems just days after delivery? |
Quoting JohnJ (Reply 77): Must be. I caught the arrival of JAL008 yesterday and decided to wait for the 1:10 departure of JAL007 back to NRT. Well, I waited, allright. As of 4 p.m. the plane was still at the gate, and the monitor inside the airport listed a 7 p.m. departure time. By the time I got home I saw JAL had updated the status with a departure for today. It will be interesting to see if it goes; no flight plan on FlightAware doesn't bode particulary well 2 1/2 hours prior to scheduled departure (the 4/27 departure is listed). |
Quoting don (Reply 75): Boston became the first new North American destination for JAL since Las Vegas came online in Oct. 1998 (then went offline in Sep 2001.) |
Quoting ChrisNH (Reply 79): Quoting don (Reply 75): Boston became the first new North American destination for JAL since Las Vegas came online in Oct. 1998 (then went offline in Sep 2001.) I hope once 'subsidies' end that JAL doesn't do the same thing to Boston. Granted, the 787 seems as though it would make Boston profitable for them. But I also know JAL is getting some financial incentives to come here. |
Quoting crosswinds21 (Reply 76): So...I'm curious, was yesterday's (25 April) BOS-NRT flight cancelled? Flightaware doesn't list anything about the flight at all (even though it was originally showing as "scheduled" a couple of days ago) and Japan Airlines' website lists the scheduled departure on 26 April instead of 25 April with the arrival into NRT likewise a day late. The reason is listed as "due to aircraft maintenance." Does anyone have any insight into this? Is the 787 already experiencing mechanical problems just days after delivery? |
Quoting MAV88 (Reply 80): It's not like there is a company that is subsidizing the route by guaranteeing a number of tickets will be bought. The market is there and this is the perfect plane for it. Boston should be able to sustain Asia service without an issue. |
Quoting ADent (Reply 81): There was a thread mentioning a delay of 24 hours - it was deleted. Speculation was on elevator problem. |

That's true however JL is getting "incentives" from Massport, the city of Boston, and Massachusetts. I think what Chris was alluding to is that when these incentives expire, JL may chose to leave whether there is a market or not. Personally I think at least another airline or two will enter the BOS-Asia market. There are rumors of a ME carrier coming here and I could see UA , NH, or KE starting 787 service. |
