I saw the tail as I was driving past...didn't get a chance to see the livery, but I was wondering why NZ sent a 777. Is this a one-off, or are the 747's gone from SFO for good, or why?

NZ has been sending their 777s to SFO since ~2006. Abeit, their 772. Only recently, they have been sending their 77E.
Since they only have 2 744s in their fleet, they will still come to SFO and be supplemented by the 77E to keep capacity. There is speculation that their 744s will leave the fleet when they get enough of 77Es.
