290 Pax On A PIA 733? Are You Kidding Me

Fri Apr 20, 2012 2:18 pm

I came across this article today from Av Herald:

Incident: PIA B733 at Faisalabad on Apr 19th 2012, engine shut down in flight

By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Apr 20th 2012 14:01Z, last updated Friday, Apr 20th 2012 14:04Z
A Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 737-300, registration AP-BCF performing flight PK-341 from Faisalabad to Karachi (Pakistan), was climbing out of Faisalabad when the crew needed to shut an engine (CFM56) down and diverted to Lahore (Pakistan) where the aircraft landed safely.

The incident aircraft was able to depart Lahore again and reached Karachi with a delay of 11 hours.

Some Pakistani press report the airline managed to cram 290 people on board of the aircraft stating the aircraft was bound for Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) reporting they got no comment from the airline but citing sources within the Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan."

I wonder where the press got their info on the pax count and is it even possible to stuff 290 pax on a 733 without having people standing all over the place?

I'm sure thats an embellishment. Maybe she was overloaded but 290 people is utterly ridiculous, I highly doubt - (and hope) that a crew would take off with that amount of people on board. That's so fair illegal it's untrue - the thing's a 149 seater! Unless every person had a lap child...

Can anyone shed light on whether overcrowding - to this ridiculous degree - has ever happened in Pakistan?

I severely hope the Pakistani press has screwed up and it's a 773, not a 733...

Well if Qantas can get this many on a 747-200

When Cyclone Tracy devastated the town of Darwin at Christmas 1974, Qantas established a world record for the most people ever embarked on a single aircraft when it evacuated 673 people on a single Boeing 747 flight. In March 1979,

290 pax even at 120 lbs EACH would put them WELL over the max zero fuel weight. not counting for Bags and Fuel they'd be WELL over the recommended max Gross weight for Takeoff. That's Suicide!!

Not to get too off-topic but I believe El Al beat that record by a good bit in 1991. 1,122 pax on a cargo 747.

I could be mistaken, but I thought it was a pax 747, not cargo.

Either way, wow!!!

Somehow, I highly doubt PK would board by zones... I think it'd be a free for all

On the other hand they could rebrand Business Class to "At least there's some oxygen here class"--although 149 people on a 733... I guess there's no Business Class.

It was 4X-AXD, a 747-258C, so a cargo aircraft.

This doesn't surprise me one bit. PK are renowned for their ignorance of aviation rules and regulations. I believe it.

Simple: many people were standing on the crown of the fuse. Happens on the railways all the time.

C does not always mean cargo. In this case it might mean convertible. Every photo of AXD in the database shows the a/c with passenger windows, so not a cargo aircraft. Upon close examination of those photos, I see no indication of any side or nose cargo door. If it WERE a cargo aircraft, they'd be hard pressed getting cargo through the passenger doors.

Let's not forget the World Airways 727 at Da Nang.
268 in the pax cabin plus around 60 in the holds and landing gear bays...
...Circumstances were different.

I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.
