Eastern Airlines In Hot Springs, VA
I am looking for information on an Eastern Airlines jet that made an emergency landing at the Hot Springs, VA (Ingalls Field) airport in 1978. I know there was a bomb threat and I was told that the bomber claimed the bomb would detonate below a certain altitude. The Hot Springs Airport has such a high elevation that it was chosen for the landing. Can ayone comfirm this? Do any of you know what type of aircraft it was?

It says it was an Orlando to Neward flight with 116 passengers and 5 crew.
The newspaper is from Saturday, July 29, 1978, so I would guess this happened on Friday, July 28th, 1978.
Could be a 727-200, a DC-9-31... a few other options also. Runway at Hot Springs (HSP) is only 5600 ft long, and almost 4,000 ft in Elevation.

Based on the five crew number and my hazy, fading memory I'm inclined to believe it was a DC-9-30.

That was like an airplane version of the movie, "Speed".
A similar thing happened to a UA DC-8-61. They took off from LAX for HNL. When they got out over the ocean, someone phoned in a bomb threat stating that the bomb would go off when they descended below a certain altitude (like 5000 feet IIRC). So, the crew turned around and flew to COS.

It was also a 1967 TV movie written by Rod Serling - "Doomsday Flight". Van Johnson landed his jet at DEN to keep the bomb from going off at 5,000 feet. Many phony threats followed after the airing.
