Looks like TUS to me. For example, in their January 1979 timetable AA's nonstop departures from TUS were as follows. Note at that time they had 4 707 departures plus one 727 between 1105 and 1300, including 3 707s between 1200 and 1300

Im 100% sure it's PHX and not TUS. The control tower at TUS is no where near the terminal and TUS never had a observation deck.

The only reason I said TUS was because the control tower didn't look like the PHX tower in these 1963 and 1973 PHX photos.

I will second that its PHX, as that was the old control tower(now gone).
The 747: The hands who designed it were guided by god.

When they built terminal 3 at PHX they also built a new control tower, which has since been replaced by another newer one. This photo was taken sometime between 77-79. I seem to recall AA,WA,DL and CO all moved into terminal 3 near the end of '79.

I remember flying in and out of PHX back in 1976. AA and Trans World were on the same concourse. Each had one or two gates that had jet bridges. Then, you walked down a set of stairs to the rest of the gates, which were at ramp level.
Coming in from ORD on an AA DC-10, we deplaned via a jet bridge. Going out to ORD on a TWA L-1011, we boarded via a jet bridge, and I think the 707 going to STL out of the next gate was also parked at a jet bridge.
It looks like the 707 farthest away to the left is parked at the gate with the jet bridge.
I'm trying to think of other airports that AA served that sit near mountains. The only one I can think of is SLC, and this isn't SLC. There are way too many AA jets. In the 1970s, AA had Western doing its "below the wing" service, and the stairs have AA logos, rather than WA logos.

Three of the four 707s have HF antennas, but the fourth isn't automatically a 720. Many 707-123s had the fin mounted HF antenna removed in later years. Likewise, any of the airplanes with antennas in the picture could be -323s. It's impossible to tell from this photograph.

You can tell that the first 707 with the HF antenna is a -123. Not enough windows for a -323, and too many for a 720.

Maybe one flight was delayed. I doubt the ORD 707 was normally on the ground the same time as the SFO 707.

No, all that schedule data was for TUS where I thought the photo had been taken, but it's been confirmed it was taken at PHX so you can ignore the schedule info. However, it's interesting that if the photo really was at TUS the schedule almost works.

As a TUS resident for most of my childhood, I can say the photo is definitely not Tucson. The tower in the background definitely resembles PHX. Also, I can't recall TUS ever having five AA aircraft on the ground at one time.

After AA took delivery of DC-10s, the 720s were phased out. They were retired several years before AA-s 707-123s and -323s. When AA sold their 720s, some of the buyers wanted HF antennas, so AA swapped the tail fins of HF equipped 707-123s with the fins of non-equipped 720s.
